Futuro: will / shall

A1 Future: will / shall 19 / 50

Em resumo

Usamos will + verbo base para falar do futuro: decisões instantâneas, previsões, promessas, oferecimentos, e factos futuros certos (I’ll call you tonight). Shall é uma palavra britânica mais formal, usada sobretudo com I/we para oferecimentos e sugestões (Shall I help? Shall we go?).

Regra

Will é um verbo modal, por isso a forma é simples e nunca muda:

  • will + verbo base — igual para todos os sujeitos (sem -s em he/she/it).
  • Forma curta (muito comum na fala): ‘ll -> I’ll, you’ll, she’ll, we’ll, they’ll.
  • Negativa: will not = won’t + verbo base.
  • Perguntas: coloca-se will em primeiro lugar -> Will you come?

Usamos will sobretudo para quatro coisas:

UtilizaçãoSignificadoExemplo
Decisão instantâneadecidida agora, no momento em que falaThe phone’s ringing - I’ll get it!
Previsão / opiniãoo que pensamos ou esperamos (muitas vezes depois de I think)I think it will rain later.
Promessa / oferecimentoprometemos ou oferecemo-nos para fazer algoI’ll help you. I won’t tell anyone.
Facto futuroalgo certo sobre o futuroThe sun will rise at 6:02 tomorrow.

Shall (britânico, bastante formal) usa-se com I e we para fazer oferecimentos e sugestões, quase sempre numa pergunta:

  • Shall I + verbo base…? = Do you want me to…? -> Shall I open the window?
  • Shall we + verbo base…? = Let’s…? / uma sugestão -> Shall we go now?

Formas e estruturas

Will — todas as pessoas (mesma forma):

FormaEsquemaExemplo
Afirmativasujeito + will / ‘ll + baseShe will call / She ‘ll call.
Negativasujeito + won’t + baseThey won’t come.
Pergunta de sim/nãoWill + sujeito + baseWill he like it?
pergunta Wh-Wh- + will + sujeito + baseWhen will you arrive?
Resposta curtaYes/No + sujeito + will / won’tYes, I will. / No, I won’t.

will ou be going to — ambos falam do futuro, mas o motivo é diferente:

Use will para…Use be going to para…
uma decisão tomada agora (I’ll have the soup)um plano que já tinha (I’m going to visit Mum)
uma previsão baseada em opinião (You’ll love it)uma previsão baseada em provas (Look - it’s going to rain)

Importante: depois de when, if, as soon as, before, after, use o presente simples, NÃO will, para o futuro:

  • I’ll call you when I arrive. (NÃO when I will arrive)
  • We’ll start as soon as he’s ready.

Erros frequentes

  • I will to help you. -> I will help you. — sem to depois de will; use o verbo base.
  • She will calls you. -> She will call you. — nunca acrescente -s; will é igual para todos os sujeitos.
  • I willn’t come. -> I won’t come. — a negativa curta é won’t; willn’t não existe. (A forma completa I will not come também está correta, só que mais enfática.)
  • I’ll call you when I will arrive. -> …when I arrive. — presente simples depois de when/if/as soon as.
  • Shall I to open the window? / Will I open the window? -> Shall I open the window? — os oferecimentos com I/we usam Shall + base, sem to.

Dicas

  • Pense assim: “decidir agora -> will; planeado antes -> going to.” Um I’ll… espontâneo é o clássico will.
  • Na fala, quase toda a gente diz ‘ll e won’t. Dizer a forma completa I will pode soar pesado ou excessivamente sério (como uma promessa forte).
  • Shall é sobretudo britânico e sobretudo em Shall I…? / Shall we…? Pode sempre usar Should I…? ou Do you want me to…? em vez disso.
  • Depois das palavras de tempo when / if / as soon as / before / after, o verbo seguinte fica no presente, mesmo que se refira ao futuro.
