B1 Modals of deduction & speculation 42 / 50
| might / may / could | 也许是真的,也许不是 | “有可能” |
- The light’s on, so she must be home.(证据 -> 肯定是)
- He can’t be hungry - he just ate.(证据 -> 肯定不是)
- I’m not sure where Tom is; he might be at the gym.(开放的可能性)
重要:must be(肯定是真的)的反面是 can’t be(肯定是假的),而不是 mustn’t be。
| can’t have / couldn’t have + 过去分词 | 我肯定这件事没发生过 |
| might / may / could have + 过去分词 | 也许发生过 |
*表推断时,“they should have arrived by now”的意思是我猜他们应该已经……
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 现在 | must be / do | can’t / couldn’t be / do | might / may / could be / do | should / ought to be / do |
| 过去 | must have done | can’t / couldn’t have done | might / may / could have done | should / ought to have done |
说明:
- 情态动词后面的动词永远是原形(be、go、know),绝不是 to be 或 is。
- 表示过去时,一律用 have + 过去分词(have gone、have known、have left)。
She must be working late. / He might have been sleeping.
例句
| English |
|---|---|
| Their car’s in the drive, so they must be at home. | |
| You can’t be tired already - we’ve only just started! | 肯定不是真的;是 must be 的反面,不是 mustn’t。 |
| The keys aren’t here; I might have left them at work.
| Nobody’s answering. They could be asleep. | |
| She can’t have heard the news - she looks so happy.
| The match started at six, so it should be finishing now. |
| He must have missed the bus; he’s never this late. | |
| They may not know the way - send them the map. | may not = 也许不是(和 can’t 不一样)。 |
- She mustn’t be home. -> She can’t be home. ——表示“肯定是假的”,要用 can’t,绝不用 mustn’t。
- He must left already. -> He must have left already.
- It might to rain. -> It might rain.
- They can’t be missed the train. -> They can’t have missed the train.
- You must to be joking. -> You must be joking.
- 记忆窍门:must 和 can’t 是最肯定的一对;might/may/could 都是不太确定的。
- 表示过去的事,只需把 have + 过去分词接在同一个情态动词后面:must be -> must have been。
- 不要混淆 must(第 26 课表义务;这里表肯定)和 can(第 17 课表能力;这里 can’t 表不可能)的含义。
