Inversão depois de advérbios negativos

C1 Inversion after negative adverbials 48 / 50

Never have I seen such a mess.

Regra

Normalmente o sujeito vem antes do verbo: I have never seen this. Mas se colocar um advérbio ou expressão negativo ou restritivo no início, tem de inverter o sujeito e o verbo auxiliar (have, did, should, was, etc.):

Never have I seen such a mess. (não Never I have seen)

Pontos-chave:

  • Se não houver auxiliar, acrescente do / does / did (como nas perguntas): Rarely does he complain.
  • Só o auxiliar se move — o verbo principal fica no seu lugar: Little did they know…

Condicionais sem ifHad I known, I’d have come.If I had known…
Advérbio de lugar no início + sujeito nominalOn the hill stood a castle.A castle stood on the hill.

Formas e estruturas

1. Depois de advérbios negativos ou restritivos

Advérbio/expressãoEsquemaExemplo
Never / Rarely / Seldom+ aux. + sujeitoSeldom does she miss a deadline.
Hardly / Scarcely … whenHardly + had + suj. + V3 … whenHardly had I sat down when the phone rang.
No sooner … thanNo sooner + had + suj. + V3 … thanNo sooner had we left than it rained.
Not only … (but also)Not only + aux. + suj. …Not only did he apologise, but he also paid.
LittleLittle + aux. + sujeitoLittle did she suspect the truth.
Only then / Only after / Only by / Not until+ aux. + sujeitoOnly then did I understand. / Only by asking did we find out.
Under no circumstances / On no account+ aux. + sujeitoUnder no circumstances should you open it.
At no time / In no way+ aux. + sujeitoAt no time were they in danger.

2. Condicionais sem if (formal)

Condicionalversão com IfVersão invertida
3.º tipo (passado)If I had knownHad I known
2.º tipo (be)If I were richWere I rich
2.º tipo (ação futura)If I were to moveWere I to move
1.º tipo / conselhoIf you should need helpShould you need help

EsquemaExemplo
Advérbio + verbo + sujeito nominalHere comes the bus. / On the corner stood an old church.
There she goes.

Exemplos

EnglishNota
Never have I felt so welcome anywhere.Coloca-se never no início -> inverte-se have + sujeito; enfático.
Rarely does a film move me to tears.
Hardly had the train left when I realised my bag was gone.
No sooner had she spoken than the room fell silent.Par no sooner … than (nunca … when).
Not only did they win, but they also broke the record. Not only … but also acrescenta e realça um segundo facto.
Only after the meeting did we learn the truth.Only + expressão de tempo provoca a inversão na oração principal.
Had I known about the strike, I’d have driven.Condicional do 3.º tipo sem If; Had substitui if I had.
Should you change your mind, just call me.Condição em aberto formal/cortês; Should = if you happen to.

Erros frequentes

  • Never I have seen this. -> Never have I seen this.
  • Rarely he eats meat. -> Rarely does he eat meat. — não há auxiliar, por isso insira do/does/did e mantenha o verbo principal na forma base.
  • No sooner I arrived when… -> No sooner had I arrived than… — inverta E combine com than, não com when.
  • Only then I realised. -> Only then did I realise. — only + advérbio/expressão continua a obrigar à inversão na oração principal.
  • Here comes she. -> Here she comes.

-> “Never have I…”
  • Depois de hardly/scarcely use when; depois de no sooner use than. Ambos costumam levar o passado perfeito.
