Pronomes reflexos e indefinidos

A2 Reflexive & indefinite pronouns 30 / 50

Também acrescentam ênfase (I painted the house myself = ninguém me ajudou), e depois de by significam «sozinho / sem ajuda»: He lives by himself. Quando um verbo ou um adjetivo leva uma preposição, o reflexo segue-a apenas e mantém o significado simples de «a mesma pessoa»: She only thinks about herself, Be kind to yourself.

SujeitoReflexoExemplo
ImyselfI hurt myself.
you (uma pessoa)yourselfHelp yourself.
hehimselfHe blames himself.
sheherselfShe enjoyed herself.
ititselfThe cat washed itself.
weourselvesWe introduced ourselves.
theythemselvesThey built it themselves.

Diga-se I feel tired (não I feel myself tired), She got dressed (não dressed herself), We meet on Mondays (não meet ourselves).

each other / one another (recíprocos). They love each other significa que A ama B e B ama A (mutuamente). They love themselves significa que cada pessoa ama apenas a si própria. Use-se each other para duas pessoas; one another é uma forma ligeiramente mais formal de dizer o mesmo.

Pronomes indefinidos. Formam-se a partir de some- / any- / no- / every- mais -one / -body / -thing / -where. A escolha entre some / any segue a mesma regra da lição 22: some- nas frases afirmativas, ofertas e pedidos; any- nas negativas e interrogativas. Estas palavras levam um verbo no singular (Everybody is here), mas retoma-se a referência a elas com they / their / them quando a pessoa é desconhecida (Someone left their bag), e com themselves quando é preciso um reflexo (No one should have to do it by themselves).

Erros frequentes

  • I feel myself tired. -> I feel tired.
  • They love themselves. (com o sentido de mutuamente) -> They love each other. — use-se each other para «um ao outro».
  • Everybody are happy. -> Everybody is happy.
  • I didn’t see nobody. -> I didn’t see anybody. / I saw nobody. — não misture not com no-; use-se any- depois de uma negação.
  • Is there something to eat? -> Is there anything to eat? — use-se any- nas interrogativas (mas some- nas ofertas: Would you like something?).

Dicas

  • Reflexo = um espelho. A ação volta para quem a faz. Se o complemento for uma pessoa diferente, use-se um pronome pessoal complemento normal: I saw him (não himself).
  • by + -self = sozinho. I did it by myself = sem ajuda; I did it myself (ênfase) = fui eu, não outra pessoa.
  • each other (2 pessoas) ou -selves (de volta para si próprio). «They emailed each other» = nos dois sentidos; «They emailed themselves» = cada um enviou um e-mail para a sua própria caixa de entrada.
  • Depois de someone / everybody / no one, use-se um verbo no singular, mas they/their para retomar a referência — evita dizer he or she: Has anyone lost their keys?
