C1 Cleft sentences for emphasis 49 / 50

(It was Anna who called)과 what절 강조구문(What I need is a holiday)입니다.

(It wasn’t me, it was him)에, 그리고 새롭거나 중요한 정보에 초점을 맞추는 데 유용합니다.

1. It 강조구문은 강조하는 부분을 it + be 바로 뒤에 둡니다.

It + be + 초점 + that / who + (절의 나머지 부분)

Anna called yesterday. It was Anna that/who called yesterday.
Anna called Tom.It was Tom that/who Anna called.
We met in 2010.It was in 2010 that we met.시간
The noise bothers me.It’s the noise that bothers me.사물
We only found out on Monday. It was not until Monday that we found out.

사람에는 who(또는 that)을, 사물·시간·장소에는 that을 쓰세요. 동사 be는 대개 원래 문장의 시제(It is… / It was…) 마지막 줄에서는 not이 초점의 일부이므로(not until Monday = “그때 가서야”), 정정하는 대상이 없어서 두 번째 it was…절이 뒤따르지 않습니다 — It wasn’t Sam, it was Anna과는 다릅니다.

What + (절) + be + 초점

I need a holiday.What I need is a holiday.
I like her honesty. What I like about her is her honesty.
We missed the train. What happened was (that) we missed the train.

what 뒤의 동사는 단수형(What I need is…)

The thing (that)… is…The thing that worries me is the cost.
The reason (why)… is…The reason I left was the noise.
The place (where)… is…The place where we stayed was lovely.
The person who… is/was…The person who fixed it was Mia.
All (that)… is…All I want is some peace.

it ~ that 강조구문을 의문문으로 만들려면 it와 be를 도치하세요: Was it the manager who signed it? What is it that you need?

All you have to do is과 What you should do is All you have to do is ask.

  • It is Anna who call. -> It is Anna who calls. — who/that절의 동사는 여전히 초점(Anna = she)에 수를 일치시킵니다.
  • What I need are a holiday. -> What I need is a holiday. — what은 단수이므로 is/was를 쓰세요.
  • It was him who told me.(격식 있는 글) -> It was he who told me. / 비격식으로는 It was him.
  • The reason is because I was late. -> The reason is that I was late. — the reason is 뒤에는 because가 아니라 that을 쓰세요.
  • Is the noise that bothers me. -> It’s the noise that bothers me.

It is/was(it ~ that 강조구문) 바로 뒤나 be(what절 강조구문) 바로 뒤에 두세요.
It wasn’t me, it was him. What I really wanted was…
It was lost that… What I did was lose my keys라고 말하세요.
