要点

フランス語では、英語ならしばしば単に「it is」や「there is」と言うところに、三つの異なる構文を使い分けます。c’est は何であるかを特定するとき(名前を挙げるとき)、il/elle est は性質や職業をそのまま述べて描写するとき、il y a は何かが存在すると言うときに使います。

規則

c’est と il est のどちらを使うかは、ほとんどすべての学習者を悩ませます。どちらも「彼は/それは〜だ」と訳せるからです。コツはその後に何が続くかを見ることです。

特定するための c’est(c’est un médecin)

何かや誰かを指してそれが何であるかを言うときは c’est を使います。後には名詞が続き、ほとんどの場合、冠詞か限定詞が付きます。

  • c’est + 冠詞/限定詞付きの名詞: C’est un médecin. C’est une voiture. C’est mon frère.
  • c’est + 名前: C’est Marie. C’est Paris.
  • c’est + 強勢形代名詞: C’est moi. C’est lui.
  • c’est + 一般的な考えや状況を表す形容詞(特定の人物ではない場合):C’est facile. C’est bon. C’est intéressant.
  • 複数形:改まった話し方では ce sont ですが、くだけた場面では c’est も非常によく使われます:Ce sont mes parents.
  • 否定形:ce n’est pas + 名詞、複数形は ce ne sont pas:Ce n’est pas ma voiture. Ce ne sont pas mes lunettes. エリジオンしていた c’ は ne の前で元の ce に戻ります。

c’est は何かにラベルを貼るようなものだと考えましょう。「Qu’est-ce que c’est ?」 や 「Qui est-ce ?」 への答えです。

描写するための il/elle est + 形容詞/職業

その人や物をすでに知っていて描写するときは il est/elle est を使います。後には形容詞、または(冠詞のない)そのままの職業名が続きます。

  • il/elle est + 形容詞: Il est grand. Elle est fatiguée. Ils sont français. 形容詞は性・数に一致します(レッスン8を参照)。
  • il/elle est + 冠詞のない職業名: Il est médecin. Elle est avocate. Ils sont étudiants.
  • 三人称に限らずどの人称でも使えます:Je suis infirmier. Tu es libraire. Nous sommes professeurs. je/tu/nous には切り替えられる c’est がないので、冠詞が現れるのは名詞に修飾語が付くときだけです:Je suis un bon infirmier.

これが重要な対比です。職業名は il est の後では冠詞を取らず、c’est の後では冠詞を取ります。

  • Il est médecin. =「彼は医者です」(描写:彼の職業)
  • C’est un médecin. =「彼は医者です/それは医者です」(特定:un を伴う名詞句)

どちらも正しい文ですが、構文が異なります。冠詞、名詞の前に置く形容詞、補語のいずれかを加えるときは必ず c’est に切り替えます:C’est un bon médecin.(il est un bon médecin とは決して言いません)。

存在を表す il y a

Il y a は「〜がある/〜がいる」という意味で、何かがある場所に存在する、または居ることを述べます。不変化で、単数にも複数にも同じ il y a を使います。

  • il y a + 名詞: Il y a un livre sur la table. Il y a trois chaises.
  • 否定形:il n’y a pas de + 名詞:Il n’y a pas de pain.(否定文では冠詞が de になります。レッスン10を参照)
  • 疑問文:Est-ce qu’il y a un problème ? / Y a-t-il un problème ?
  • 性質を描写することも、名前で人を特定することも決してなく、存在や現存だけを述べます。

語形と文型

よくある間違い

  • Il est un médecin -> Il est médecin / C’est un médecin:il est の後では職業名は冠詞を取りません。un を加えるのは c’est を使う場合だけです。
  • Voici Marie. C’est très gentille. -> Voici Marie. Elle est très gentille.:既知の人や物を描写するには il/elle est + 形容詞を使い、c’est は使いません。
  • Il y a trois chaise -> Il y a trois chaises:il y a は不変化ですが、その後の名詞はふつうどおり複数形を取ります。
  • Il y a pas un pain -> Il n’y a pas de pain:否定文では冠詞は de になります。
  • C’est sont mes parents -> Ce sont mes parents:c’est の複数形は ce sont であって、c’est sont ではありません。
  • Elle est une bonne médecin -> C’est une bonne médecin:名詞に冠詞や形容詞が加わったら、すぐに c’est を使います。

ヒント

  • 二つの問い:これは何ですか?(ラベル、名詞) -> c’est。彼/彼女/それはどんな様子か、または何をする人か? -> il/elle est。
  • 冠詞テスト:名詞の前に冠詞(un、une、le、mon…)があれば c’est を使います。職業名の前に冠詞がなければ -> il est。
  • 状況についての一般的な感想を述べるには c’est + 形容詞を使います:C’est super ! C’est nul.
  • il y a は「何があるか?」に答えます。物の存在を述べるだけで、être の代わりには決してなりません。
  • 数に関わらず、否定文では il n’y a pas de と言います:Il n’y a pas de problème / de problèmes。
  • 形容詞で特定の人を描写するときは il/elle est + 形容詞を優先し、c’est + 形容詞は一般的な考えのために取っておきます。
