要点
2つのものを比べるときは比較級を（cheaper、more expensive）、集団の中から1つを選び出すときは最上級を使います（the cheapest、the most expensive）。短い形容詞には -er／-est をつけ、長い形容詞には more／most を使います。
規則
形容詞の長さによって形が決まります：

このわずかな語群には more quiet という形も可能ですが、quieter が普通の形です。
次のパターンで比較の文を作ります：
- 比較級のあとに than：Tokyo is bigger than Osaka.
- 等しい・等しくない場合には (not) as … as：She is as tall as her brother.
- 最上級には the をつけ、よく in（場所・集団）や of（集合・時）を伴います：the tallest in the class、the best day of the year。
語形と文型
短い形容詞のつづりの変化：

比較の度合いを強めたり弱めたりするには、比較級の前に much／far／a bit／a little を置きます：
- This phone is much better.（大きな違い）
- Today is a bit colder than yesterday.（小さな違い）
2つのことが一緒に変化する場合：the＋比較級…、the＋比較級…
- The older I get, the happier I am.
- The more you practise, the better you speak.
副詞も同じ考え方ですが、通常は more／most を使います：
- Please drive more carefully.
- She works the most efficiently in the morning.

よくある間違い
- more bigger -> bigger：-er の形に more を一緒に使うことは決してありません（二重比較級はだめ）。
- more good／the most good -> better／the best：good は不規則な形です。
- She is taller that me -> taller than me：比較には that ではなく than を使います。
- the most cheap -> the cheapest：1音節の形容詞には most ではなく -est を使います。
- as tall than him -> as tall as him：同等比較の型は as … as です。
ヒント
- まず音節を数えましょう。1音節なら -> -er／-est、3音節以上なら -> more／most。-y で終わる2音節の語は普通 -ier／-iest になり（easy -> easier）、少数の語は -er／-est になります（quieter、simpler）。
- 比較級は than と、最上級は the と結びつきます（さらに in や of を伴うこともよくあります）。
- thanとasのあとでは、話し言葉では目的格の代名詞が自然です（than me）。完全な節（than I am）はより改まった言い方です。
- 不規則な形容詞の短いリストをカードに書いて覚えましょう：good／bad／far／little／many。これらは決して -er や more をつけません。
