A2 Past continuous 24 / 50
At 8 p.m. I was cooking dinner.(8時より前に始めて、8時にはまだ料理をしていました。)
-
I was reading when the phone rang. While I was reading, the lights went out.
-
She was studying while he was cooking.
-
The sun was shining and the birds were singing.
状態動詞(know、want、like、have=所有する、be)は、この用法では通常進行形を取りません:I knew the answer と言い、I was knowing とは言いません。
主語+was/were+動詞-ing:
| 主語 | was/were | -ing |
|---|---|---|
| I / he / she / it | was | working |
| you / we / they | were | working |
否定文:was/wereのあとに not を加えます:
|---|---|
| I was not sleeping | I wasn’t sleeping |
| They were not sleeping | They weren’t sleeping |
|---|---|---|
| Yes/No | Was she driving? | Yes, she was. / No, she wasn’t. |
| Wh- | What were you doing? | I was waiting for the bus. |
-ingのつづり: make -> making(語尾の e を落とす)、sit -> sitting(語尾の子音を重ねる)、lie -> lying(ie -> y)。
例文
| English | 注 |
|---|---|
| At midnight we were still dancing. | |
| I was waiting at the station when the train arrived. | |
| While the kids were sleeping, Dad cooked breakfast. |
| Tom was watching TV while Mia was doing her homework. | |
| It was raining hard, and the wind was blowing. | |
| What were you doing at six o’clock yesterday? |
| She wasn’t listening, so she missed the news. | |
| I cut my finger while I was chopping onions. |
- I was knowing the answer -> I knew the answer:状態動詞は進行形を取りません。
- When I was cooking, I burn my hand -> When I was cooking, I burnt my hand:
- We was watching a film -> We were watching a film:you/we/theyには were を使います。
- While I read, the phone rang -> While I was reading, the phone rang:while
- What you were doing? -> What were you doing?:疑問文ではwas/wereを主語の前に移します。
- 動詞の前に still を加えられるなら(I was still eating)、過去進行形が合います。
