Inversion after negative adverbials

C1 Inversion after negative adverbials 48 / 50

In breve

Quando un avverbio (o un’espressione) negativo o restrittivo apre la frase, scambiamo il soggetto e l’ausiliare, proprio come in una domanda: Never have I seen such a mess. Suona enfatico, formale o letterario, quindi usalo con parsimonia.

La regola

Normalmente il soggetto viene prima del verbo: I have never seen this. Ma se sposti un avverbio (o un’espressione) negativo o restrittivo all’inizio, devi invertire il soggetto e il verbo ausiliare (have, did, should, was, ecc.):

Never have I seen such a mess. (non Never I have seen)

Punti chiave:

  • Se non c’è un ausiliare, aggiungi do / does / did (come nelle domande): Rarely does he complain.
  • Si sposta solo l’ausiliare — il verbo principale resta al suo posto: Little did they know…

DoveEsempioVersione semplice
Periodi ipotetici senza ifHad I known, I’d have come.If I had known…
Avverbio di luogo anteposto + soggetto nomeOn the hill stood a castle.A castle stood on the hill.

Forme e strutture

1. Dopo avverbi (o espressioni) negativi / restrittivi

Avverbio (o espressione)StrutturaEsempio
Never / Rarely / Seldom+ ausiliare + soggettoSeldom does she miss a deadline.
Hardly / Scarcely … whenHardly + had + sogg. + V3 … whenHardly had I sat down when the phone rang.
No sooner … thanNo sooner + had + sogg. + V3 … thanNo sooner had we left than it rained.

2. Periodi ipotetici senza if (formale)

Periodo ipoteticoVersione con IfVersione invertita
Terzo (passato)If I had knownHad I known
Secondo (be)If I were richWere I rich
Secondo (azione futura)If I were to moveWere I to move
Primo / consiglioIf you should need helpShould you need help

StrutturaEsempio
Avverbio + verbo + soggetto nomeHere comes the bus. / On the corner stood an old church.
There she goes.

Esempi

EnglishNota
Never have I felt so welcome anywhere.Anteponi never -> inverti have + soggetto; enfatico.
Rarely does a film move me to tears.Nessun ausiliare, quindi aggiungi does; il verbo principale move resta alla forma base.
Hardly had the train left when I realised my bag was gone.
No sooner had she spoken than the room fell silent.Coppia no sooner … than (mai … when).
Not only did they win, but they also broke the record. Not only … but also aggiunge ed enfatizza un secondo fatto.
Only after the meeting did we learn the truth.Only + espressione di tempo attiva l’inversione nella proposizione principale.
Had I known about the strike, I’d have driven.Terzo periodo ipotetico senza If; Had sostituisce if I had.
Should you change your mind, just call me.Condizione aperta formale/cortese; Should = if you happen to.

Errori frequenti

  • Never I have seen this. -> Never have I seen this. — l’ausiliare deve venire prima del soggetto.
  • Rarely he eats meat. -> Rarely does he eat meat. — non c’è un ausiliare, quindi inserisci do/does/did e lascia il verbo principale alla forma base.
  • No sooner I arrived when… -> No sooner had I arrived than… — inverti E abbina a than, non a when.
  • Only then I realised. -> Only then did I realise. — only + avverbio (o espressione) impone comunque l’inversione nella proposizione principale.
  • Here comes she. -> Here she comes.

  • Costruiscila come una domanda, poi leggila come un’affermazione: pensa «Have I ever…?» -> «Never have I…»
  • Dopo hardly/scarcely usa when; dopo no sooner usa than.
