Question tag (la coda interrogativa) e domande indirette

B1 Question tags & indirect questions 40 / 50

In breve

You’re coming, aren’t you? Could you tell me where the station is?

La regola

Question tag

  1. Affermativo e negativo si invertono. Un’affermazione positiva prende un tag negativo; un’affermazione negativa prende un tag positivo.
  2. Ausiliare + pronome. Il tag ripete l’ausiliare, il modale o BE dell’affermazione. Se non c’è nessuno di questi (Present/Past Simple), usa do / does / did. Poi aggiungi un pronome (non un nome).
Affermazione+ / -TagFrase completa
You are comingpositivaaren’t you?You’re coming, aren’t you?
She doesn’t smokenegativadoes she?She doesn’t smoke, does she?
They have leftpositivahaven’t they?They’ve left, haven’t they?
He can swimpositivacan’t he?He can swim, can’t he?
Tom works herepositivadoesn’t he?Tom works here, doesn’t he?
You didn’t callnegativadid you?You didn’t call, did you?

Il pronome deve corrispondere al soggetto: Tom is late, isn’t he? (non isn’t Tom). Se la frase ha più di una proposizione, il tag riprende la proposizione principale e ignora il resto: Even though the shop is shut, you can order online, can’t you?

Casi speciali

AffermazioneTagEsempio
I am …aren’t I?I’m next, aren’t I?
I’m not …am I?I’m not late, am I?
Imperativo (richiesta)will you? / won’t you? / can you?Close the door, will you?
Let’s …shall we?Let’s start, shall we?
There is / are …isn’t there? / aren’t there?There’s a problem, isn’t there?
nothing / something (soggetto)itNothing’s wrong, is it?
nobody / somebody / everybodythey (+ ausiliare plurale)Somebody called, didn’t they? / Everybody has arrived, haven’t they?

Poiché quel pronome è they, l’ausiliare del tag va al plurale insieme a esso (is -> are, has -> have, does -> do): Everybody is here, aren’t they? / Nobody has replied, have they?

Le parole negative come never, hardly, rarely, seldom, no, nothing, nobody rendono già negativa l’affermazione, quindi il tag è positivo: He never calls, does he? / You’ve hardly eaten, have you?

Intonazione (stesse parole, significato diverso):

It’s a lovely day, isn’t it?↘
You locked the door, didn’t you?↗

Domande indirette (incassate)

  2. Niente do / does / did come ausiliare di supporto.
Domanda direttaIndiretta (cortese)
Where is the station?Could you tell me where the station is?
What time does it start?I wonder what time it starts.
Is the shop open?Do you know if/whether the shop is open?
When did they leave?Do you know when they left?

Per le domande sì/no, collega con if o whether: Do you know if it’s open? Per le domande con wh-, mantieni la parola wh-: I wonder what it costs.

Forme e strutture

Formula del question tag: Statement + , + (opposite polarity) auxiliary/BE/do + pronoun ?

Verbo dell’affermazioneIl tag usa
am / is / are / was / werela stessa forma di BE
have / has / had (ausiliare)have / has / had
can, will, should, must, ecc.lo stesso modale
Present Simple (nessun ausiliare)do / does
Past Simple (nessun ausiliare)did

Eccezione — must: ripetilo solo quando significa obbligo (You must sign the form, mustn’t you?); per la deduzione, il tag viene dalla frase sottostante: She must be tired, isn’t she? / He must have left early, didn’t he? (non mustn’t she).

Aperture per domande indirette (poi ordine della frase affermativa): Could you tell me … / Do you know … / I wonder … / Would you mind telling me … / I’d like to know … + parola wh- / if / whether + soggetto + verbo.

Esempi

EnglishNota
You’ve finished your homework, haven’t you?Affermazione positiva (have) -> tag negativo.
She isn’t coming to the party, is she?Affermazione negativa -> tag positivo.
Let’s take a break, shall we?Caso speciale: Let’s vuole sempre shall we.
I’m right, aren’t I?Caso speciale: I am -> aren’t I.
Pass me the salt, will you?Richiesta imperativa -> will you.
He never listens, does he?never la rende negativa -> tag positivo.
Could you tell me where the toilets are?Indiretta: ordine della frase affermativa, niente inversione.
Do you know if the train has left?Domanda indiretta sì/no con if.

Errori frequenti

  • You’re tired, isn’t it? -> You’re tired, aren’t you?
  • I’m late, amn’t I? -> I’m late, aren’t I? — il tag fisso per I am è aren’t I.
  • She likes tea, likes she? -> She likes tea, doesn’t she? — il Present Simple richiede do/does nel tag, non il verbo principale.
  • Could you tell me where is the station? -> Could you tell me where the station is? — niente inversione nelle domande indirette.
  • Do you know does it open on Sundays? -> Do you know if it opens on Sundays? — togli does; usa if/whether per il sì/no.

Consigli

  • Regola rapida: positiva + tag negativo, negativa + tag positivo. Inverti la polarità, ripeti il verbo.
  • Nessun ausiliare nell’affermazione? Il tag usa do / does / did per adattarsi al tempo verbale.
  • Cerca i negativi nascosti (never, hardly, nobody, nothing) — fanno diventare positivo il tag.
  • Per le domande indirette, prima formulati la domanda diretta nella testa, poi raddrizza l’ordine delle parole e togli do/does/did quando la incassi.
