Il discorso indiretto

B1 Reported speech 38 / 50

In breve

Il discorso indiretto mette quelle parole in una proposizione con that (la parola that è facoltativa): She said (that) she was tired.

say vs tell: tell richiede un complemento di persona (He told me…). say non prende direttamente un complemento di persona (He said…, oppure He said to me…). Quindi: He told me he was busy. / He said he was busy. (non He said me).

Le domande indirette usano l’ordine della frase affermativa: niente inversione e niente do/does/did. Per le domande sì/no usa if o whether; per le domande con wh- mantieni la parola wh-.

  • “Are you ready?” -> She asked if I was ready.
  • «Where do you live?» -> He asked where I lived. (non where did I live)

Per le forme negative usa not to.

  • “Wait here.” -> She told me to wait.
  • “Please don’t go.” -> He asked me not to go.

Non serve il backshift quando il verbo introduttivo è al presente (She says she is tired) o quando l’affermazione è ancora vera (He said the Earth is round). Dopo un verbo introduttivo al presente, il tempo verbale resta semplicemente lo stesso; per un’affermazione ancora vera puoi sia mantenere il presente sia fare il backshift (anche He said the Earth was round è corretto).

Errori frequenti

  • He said me he was late. -> He told me he was late. / He said he was late.
  • She asked where did I go. -> She asked where I went. — le domande indirette usano l’ordine della frase affermativa, niente did.
  • He asked me am I ready. -> He asked me if I was ready. — usa if/whether e il backshift per una domanda sì/no.
  • She told me wait. -> She told me to wait. — gli ordini richiedono l’infinito con to.
  • He said yesterday that he is tired. -> He said yesterday that he was tired. — fai il backshift di is -> was dopo il verbo al passato said.

Consigli

  • Could, would, might e should non fanno ulteriore backshift — sembrano già «al passato».
She said water boils at 100°C.
