Pronomi riflessivi e indefiniti

A2 Reflexive & indefinite pronouns 30 / 50

In breve

Aggiungono anche enfasi (I painted the house myself = nessuno mi ha aiutato), e dopo by significano «da solo / senza aiuto»: He lives by himself. Quando un verbo o un aggettivo richiede una preposizione, il riflessivo la segue semplicemente e mantiene il puro significato di «stessa persona»: She only thinks about herself, Be kind to yourself.

SoggettoRiflessivoEsempio
ImyselfI hurt myself.
you (singolare)yourselfHelp yourself.
hehimselfHe blames himself.
sheherselfShe enjoyed herself.
ititselfThe cat washed itself.
weourselvesWe introduced ourselves.
you (plurale)yourselvesHelp yourselves, everyone.
theythemselvesThey built it themselves.

Verbi che in inglese NON sono riflessivi. Molte lingue aggiungono «-self» a questi verbi, ma l’inglese no. Usa semplicemente il verbo da solo: wash, shave, dress, feel, relax, concentrate, meet. Di’ I feel tired (non I feel myself tired), She got dressed (non dressed herself), We meet on Mondays (non meet ourselves).

each other / one another (reciproco). Non sono la stessa cosa delle parole in «-selves». They love each other significa che A ama B e B ama A (a vicenda). They love themselves significa che ognuno ama solo se stesso. Usa each other per due persone; one another è un modo leggermente più formale per dire la stessa cosa.

Pronomi indefiniti. Si formano da some- / any- / no- / every- più -one / -body / -thing / -where. La scelta tra some / any segue la stessa regola della lezione 22: some- nelle frasi affermative, nelle offerte e nelle richieste; any- nelle negative e nelle domande. Queste parole vogliono un verbo al singolare (Everybody is here), ma ci riferiamo a loro con they / their / them quando la persona è sconosciuta (Someone left their bag), e con themselves quando serve un riflessivo (No one should have to do it by themselves).

Errori frequenti

  • I feel myself tired. -> I feel tired. — feel, wash, shave, relax, meet, concentrate non sono riflessivi in inglese.
  • They love themselves. (significato reciproco) -> They love each other. — usa each other per «a vicenda».
  • Everybody are happy. -> Everybody is happy. — i pronomi indefiniti vogliono un verbo singolare.
  • I didn’t see nobody. -> I didn’t see anybody. / I saw nobody. — non mescolare not con no-; usa any- dopo una negazione.
  • Is there something to eat? -> Is there anything to eat? — usa any- nelle domande (ma some- nelle offerte: Would you like something?).

Consigli

  • Riflessivo = uno specchio. L’azione rimbalza su chi la compie. Se l’oggetto è una persona diversa, usa un normale pronome oggetto: I saw him (non himself).
  • by + -self = da solo. I did it by myself = senza aiuto; I did it myself (enfasi) = sono stato io, non qualcun altro.
  • each other (2 persone) vs -selves (rivolto a se stessi). «They emailed each other» = in entrambe le direzioni; «They emailed themselves» = ciascuno ha mandato un’e-mail alla propria casella.
  • Dopo someone / everybody / no one, usa un verbo singolare ma they/their per riferirti indietro — evita di dover dire he or she: Has anyone lost their keys?
