Quantificatori: some/any/much/many/(a) few/(a) little

A2 Quantifiers: some/any/much/many/(a) few/(a) little 22 / 50

In breve

I quantificatori indicano quanto o quanti: usa some nelle frasi affermative e any nelle negative e nelle domande; usa much con i sostantivi non numerabili e many con i sostantivi numerabili. A few / a little significano «un po’», mentre few / little (senza a) significano «quasi niente».

La regola

some contro any. Usa some nelle frasi affermative (positive), e anche in offerte e richieste. Usa any nelle negative e nella maggior parte delle domande.

Tipo di fraseParolaEsempio
AffermativasomeI’ve got some money.
NegativaanyI don’t have any money.
DomandaanyIs there any milk?
Offerta / richiestasomeWould you like some tea? / Can I have some water?

much contro many contro a lot of. Much si usa con i sostantivi non numerabili; many si usa con i sostantivi numerabili (plurali). Li usiamo soprattutto nelle negative e nelle domande. Nelle frasi affermative, a lot of / lots of è più naturale per entrambi.

Non numerabileNumerabile (plurale)
Negativa / interrogativamuch (much time?)many (many people?)
Affermativaa lot of / lots ofa lot of / lots of

(a) few contro (a) little. Entrambe le coppie significano «una piccola quantità», ma l’articolo cambia la sfumatura.

ParolaSi usa conSignificato
a fewnumerabileuna certa quantità (positiva)
a littlenon numerabileuna certa quantità (positiva)
fewnumerabilequasi niente (idea negativa)
littlenon numerabilequasi niente (idea negativa)

Altri quantificatori. too much / too many = più di quanto vuoi (eccesso). (not) enough = la quantità giusta o meno. no + nome = not any (There’s no bread = There isn’t any bread). all, most, some, no/none, every, each, both, a couple of indicano quanto grande è la parte di un gruppo a cui ti riferisci. Per indicare un gruppo specifico, aggiungi of prima di the / my / these o di un pronome: some students (studenti in generale) ma some of the students / most of them (quella classe). All e both possono omettere of prima di un nome (all (of) the shops) ma non prima di un pronome (both of us), e every non lo prende mai (every pupil). Usa no direttamente prima di un nome, ma none con of o da solo: There are no seats / None of the seats are free / I looked, but there were none.

Errori frequenti

  • I have any friends. -> I have some friends. — usa some nelle frasi affermative.
  • I don’t have some time. -> I don’t have any time. — usa any nelle negative.
  • She has much books. -> She has a lot of / many books. — much è per il non numerabile; in una frase affermativa usa a lot of.
  • I have a few money. -> I have a little money. — money è non numerabile, quindi a little, non a few.
  • There aren’t no apples. -> There aren’t any apples. / There are no apples. — non usare una doppia negazione; no significa già «not any».
  • He has too much friends. -> He has too many friends. — too many con i numerabili plurali.

Consigli

  • some = positivo, any = incerto / negativo. Ma di’ some nelle offerte e nelle richieste, perché ti aspetti un «sì»: Would you like some cake?
  • Prima conta il sostantivo. Se puoi contarlo (plurale), usa many / a few / too many. Se non puoi, usa much / a little / too much.
  • a la rende positiva. a few / a little = «abbastanza, non preoccuparti»; few / little = «non abbastanza, un problema».
  • Nelle frasi affermative di tutti i giorni, a lot of / lots of è la scelta sicura sia per i sostantivi numerabili che per quelli non numerabili.
