I sostantivi numerabili si possono contare: hanno un singolare e un plurale, e prendono a/an e i numeri (a book, two books). I sostantivi non numerabili sono visti come una massa unica: non hanno plurale né a/an (water, money, advice).
La regola
Un sostantivo numerabile è una cosa distinta che puoi contare uno per uno. Ha due forme:
- singolare con a/an: a car, an apple
- plurale con -s o un numero: cars, two apples, three cars
Un sostantivo non numerabile è una massa, un materiale, un liquido o un’idea. Lo tratti come un tutto unico, quindi:
- niente a/an prima:
a water-> water / some water - nessun plurale con -s:
advices, informations-> advice, information - prende un verbo singolare: The news is good. The furniture is new.
Molti sostantivi non numerabili in inglese sono numerabili in altre lingue. Sono la causa degli errori più comuni al livello A2. Impara questa breve lista di parole molto frequenti come non numerabili:

Per contare un sostantivo non numerabile, usa una parola-unità o contenitore + of:

Questo li rende anche plurali: two pieces of advice, three glasses of water, two pieces of luggage.
Forme e strutture
Usa il quantificatore giusto per ogni tipo. Some e any funzionano con entrambi.

Consigli
- Se puoi mettere un numero direttamente davanti (two ___), è numerabile. Se suona sbagliato, è non numerabile.
- Trucco mnemonico per i casi difficili: advice, information, news, furniture, luggage, work, weather, money sono tutti non numerabili in inglese.
- Usa a piece of come parola per contare sicura per sostantivi astratti e collettivi: a piece of advice / information / news / furniture.
- much suona formale nelle frasi affermative. Nell’inglese di tutti i giorni usa a lot of per entrambi i tipi: a lot of money, a lot of friends.
