Comparativi e superlativi

A2 Comparatives & superlatives 23 / 50

In breve

Usa il comparativo per confrontare due cose (cheaper, more expensive) e il superlativo per scegliere una da un gruppo (the cheapest, the most expensive). Gli aggettivi brevi aggiungono -er / -est; quelli più lunghi usano more / most.

La regola

La lunghezza dell’aggettivo determina la forma:

Tipo di aggettivoComparativoSuperlativo
Una sillaba: cheap, small, fast+ -er: cheaperthe + -est: the cheapest
Due sillabe in -y: happy, easy-y -> -ier: happierthe + -iest: the happiest
Alcune parole di due sillabe: quiet, simple, narrow, clever+ -er: quieterthe + -est: the quietest
Altre parole di due o più sillabe: expensive, carefulmore + agg.: more expensivethe most + agg.: the most expensive

Per quel piccolo gruppo è possibile anche more quiet, ma quieter è la forma abituale.

Costruisci i paragoni con queste strutture:

  • than dopo un comparativo: Tokyo is bigger than Osaka.
  • (not) as … as per cose uguali / diverse: She is as tall as her brother.
  • the + superlativo, spesso con in (luoghi, gruppi) o of (un insieme/periodo): the tallest in the class, the best day of the year.

Forme e strutture

Cambiamenti ortografici per gli aggettivi brevi:

Regola ortograficaBaseComparativoSuperlativo
termina in -e -> + -r / -stnicenicernicest
vocale breve + 1 consonante -> raddoppiabigbiggerbiggest
(uguale)hothotterhottest
termina in -y -> -ier / -iesthappyhappierhappiest
una sillaba regolarecheapcheapercheapest

Aggettivi irregolari (impara a memoria):

BaseComparativoSuperlativo
goodbetterbest
badworseworst
farfurther / fartherfurthest / farthest
littlelessleast
many / muchmoremost

Rendi un paragone più forte o più debole con much / far / a bit / a little prima del comparativo:

  • This phone is much better. (grande differenza)
  • Today is a bit colder than yesterday. (piccola differenza)

Due cambiamenti che avvengono insieme: the + comparativo …, the + comparativo …

  • The older I get, the happier I am.
  • The more you practise, the better you speak.

Gli avverbi seguono la stessa logica ma di solito prendono more / most:

  • Please drive more carefully.
  • She works the most efficiently in the morning.

Errori frequenti

  • more bigger -> bigger — non usare mai more con una forma in -er (niente doppio comparativo).
  • more good / the most good -> better / the best — good è irregolare.
  • She is taller that me -> taller than me — usa than, non that, nei paragoni.
  • the most cheap -> the cheapest — gli aggettivi di una sillaba prendono -est, non most.
  • as tall than him -> as tall as him — la struttura di uguaglianza è as … as.

Consigli

  • Prima conta le sillabe: 1 sillaba -> -er/-est; 3+ sillabe -> more/most. Le parole di due sillabe che terminano in -y di solito prendono -ier/-iest (easy -> easier), e una breve lista di altre prende -er/-est (quieter, simpler).
  • Il comparativo va con than; il superlativo va con the (e spesso in o of).
  • Dopo than e as, un pronome complemento suona naturale nel parlato (than me); la proposizione completa (than I am) è più formale.
  • Tieni una breve lista di irregolari su un foglietto: good/bad/far/little/many. Non aggiungono mai -er o more.
