Demostrativos: this/that/these/those

A1 Demonstratives: this/that/these/those 6 / 50

En resumen

Usa this/that/these/those para señalar cosas y decir si están cerca de ti o lejos de ti. This y these significan cerca (aquí, ahora); that y those significan lejos (allí, entonces, terminado).

La regla

Los demostrativos cumplen dos funciones:

  1. Determinante — antes de un sustantivo: this book, those cars.
  2. Pronombre — solo, sin sustantivo detrás: This is nice. What are those?

Te dan dos informaciones a la vez:

  • Número: singular o plural.
  • Distancia: cerca de quien habla o lejos de quien habla.
Cerca (aquí / ahora)Lejos (allí / entonces)
Singularthisthat
Pluralthesethose

Cuando los usas con un sustantivo, este va justo después: this apple, these apples, that man, those men. La forma debe concordar con el número del sustantivo: sustantivo singular -> this/that; sustantivo plural -> these/those.

Usos cotidianos habituales:

  • Señalar: Look at that bird! I like these shoes.
  • Presentar a alguien: This is my friend Sam. These are my parents.
  • Por teléfono: Hello, this is Anna. Who’s that? (Usas this para ti mismo, that para la otra persona.)
  • Referirse a una idea que se acaba de decir u oír: That’s a good idea. That’s why I’m tired.

Para no repetir un sustantivo, usa one (singular) o ones (plural): I like this one. The red ones are mine. Not that one - this one. Un pronombre demostrativo también se puede precisar con una frase después, en vez de con un sustantivo — no hace falta además ones: These are mine; those on the shelf are yours. Those of us who cycle leave earlier.

Errores frecuentes

  • I like these car. -> I like this car. — el sustantivo singular necesita this/that, no these/those.
  • Look at this birds. -> Look at these birds. — el sustantivo plural necesita these/those.
  • What is those? -> What are those? — el demostrativo en plural lleva un verbo en plural.
  • Is this John? (por teléfono, preguntando por la otra persona) -> Is that John? — la persona lejana al otro lado de la línea es that, no this.
  • I want the red one. (sobre varios) -> I want the red ones. — usa ones para el plural.

Consejos

  • Truco para recordar: this y these van con here; that y those van con there.
  • Cuenta primero y luego elige: una cosa = this/that; más de una = these/those.
  • Por teléfono, tú siempre eres this (This is Anna) y la otra persona es that (Who’s that?).
  • Usa that’s para reaccionar a ideas: That’s true. That’s why. That’s a good question.
