Determinantes y pronombres posesivos

A1 Possessive determiners & pronouns 5 / 50

En resumen

Usa un determinante posesivo (my, your, his, her, its, our, their) antes de un sustantivo para decir quién es el dueño.

PropietarioPronombreEjemplo
ImineIt’s mine.
youyoursIs this yours?
hehisThe book is his.
shehersThe bag is hers.
weoursThis table is ours.
theytheirsThe dogs are theirs.

  • Anna loves her job. (Anna es mujer -> her)
  • Tom loves his job. (Tom es hombre -> his)
  • The dog wags its tail. (el perro es «it» -> its)

its frente a it’s. Suenan igual pero significan cosas distintas:

  • its = posesivo (que le pertenece): The cat licked its paw.
  • it’s = it is o it has: It’s cold today. / It’s stopped raining.

Prueba rápida: si puedes decir «it is» o «it has», escribe it’s (con apóstrofo). Si no, escribe its.

  • Pregunta: Whose is this? / Whose car is that?
  • Relativo: That’s the man whose dog barks all night.

Formas y estructuras

own. Coloca own entre un determinante posesivo y su sustantivo para añadir «y de nadie más» — her own desk, its own logo. Nunca va después de un pronombre posesivo solo: se dice my own room, no mine own room.

Dos esquemas útiles:

  • a/an + sustantivo + of + mine/yours/… = uno entre varios: She is a friend of mine. (= uno de mis amigos)
  • Whose + sustantivo + is this/are these? para preguntar por un dueño: Whose keys are these? — They’re mine.

Ejemplos

EnglishNota
This is my umbrella, not yours.determinante antes de un sustantivo (umbrella)
Is this seat yours?pronombre, va solo, sin sustantivo detrás
The children finished their homework.dueño = they -> their
Maria called her sister.dueña = Maria (mujer) -> her
Daniel lost his keys at work.dueño = Daniel (hombre) -> his
The company changed its logo.dueño = it (la empresa) -> posesivo its
It’s my birthday today.it’s = it is, con apóstrofo
Whose jacket is on the chair?whose pregunta quién es el dueño

Errores frecuentes

  • her car (cuando el dueño es hombre) -> his car — concuerda con el dueño, no con el sustantivo.
  • The dog hurt it’s leg. -> its leg — el posesivo its no lleva apóstrofo.
  • Its a nice day. -> It’s a nice day — aquí significa «it is», así que usa it’s.
  • This book is your. -> This book is yours — la forma que va sola es yours.
  • That is hers’ bag / a bag of her -> That is her bag / That is hers / a bag of hers — hers nunca lleva apóstrofo, y va sola: usa her antes de un sustantivo, hers después de of.

Consejos

  • Regla en una línea: determinante + sustantivo (my book) frente a pronombre solo (It’s mine).
  • Con its/it’s, di la frase con «it is». Si sigue teniendo sentido, necesitas el apóstrofo (it’s).
  • Las palabras posesivas hers, yours, its, ours, theirs nunca llevan apóstrofo — el apóstrofo es solo de it’s (= it is/has).
  • La palabra que eliges depende del dueño: he -> his, she -> her, it -> its, they -> their.
