El verbo 'to be' (presente)
A1 The verb 'to be' (present) 3 / 50
| Sujeto | Forma |
|---|---|
| I | am |
| he / she / it | is |
| you / we / they | are |
En el habla y la escritura cotidianas solemos usar contracciones (las formas cortas): I’m, you’re, he’s.
Para hacer un negativo, añade not después del verbo: I am not, he is not, we are not. Hay dos formas cortas para is not y are not — isn’t / ‘s not y aren’t / ‘re not. (Pero I am not solo tiene una contracción: I’m not.)
Is she…? Are you…?

— nunca Yes, I’m.
Ejemplos
| English | Nota |
|---|---|
| I’m a teacher. | Identidad / profesión — I am, en forma contracta. |
| She is from Brazil. | Nacionalidad / origen — is con she. |
| We are very happy today. | Sentimiento — are con we. |
| My brother is ten years old. | Edad — el inglés usa be, no have. |
| It’s cold this morning. | El tiempo — it is, en forma contracta. |
| The tickets aren’t expensive. | Precio en negativa — are not, forma corta. |
| Are you tired? | Pregunta de sí/no por inversión. |
| I’m hungry, but I’m not thirsty. |
Errores frecuentes
- I am teacher -> I am a teacher — las profesiones necesitan a/an (ver artículos).
- He are tall -> He is tall — he/she/it siempre lleva is.
- I no am ready -> I ‘m not ready — coloca not después del verbo, sin don’t.
- Yes, I’m. -> Yes, I am.
- I have 30 years -> I am 30 (years old) — usa be para la edad, no have.
Consejos
- Memoriza los tres pares como una cantinela: I am, he is, you are — todo lo demás se deduce de ahí.
- Para sentimientos y estados, el inglés usa be: I’m hungry / cold / afraid / right — incluso donde tu idioma usaría have (como el español «tener hambre», «tener frío», «tener miedo» o «tener razón»).
- He’s puede significar he is (aquí) o he has (en otras lecciones). En A1, con descripciones, significa he is.
- Usa una pregunta para comprobarlo y luego responde corto: Are you OK? — Yes, I am.
