Syntactic transformations & paraphrase

C1 Синтаксические трансформации 49 / 50

In short

One and the same content can be packaged in different syntactic shapes: active ↔ passive ↔ indefinite-personal, прича́стие ↔ кото́рый-clause, дееприча́стие ↔ subordinate clause, a whole clause ↔ a verbal noun with a preposition (когда́ он прие́хал → по́сле его́ прие́зда). They mean the same thing but differ in register, emphasis and information flow - choosing the right one is a core C1 skill.

The rule

A paraphrase keeps the meaning but changes the grammar. Five classic transformations:

1. Active ↔ Passive ↔ Indefinite-personal.

  • Active: the agent is the subject - Рабо́чие постро́или дом.
  • Passive (bookish): the patient becomes the subject, the agent goes into the instrumental - Дом был постро́ен рабо́чими. Perfective passive = быть + short passive participle; imperfective passive (a process) uses -ся: Дом до́лго стро́ился.
  • Indefinite-personal (neutral/spoken): drop the agent, use the verb in the 3rd person plural - Дом постро́или. (“They built the house / The house was built.”) This is the everyday way to avoid the heavy participle passive.

2. Прича́стие ↔ кото́рый-clause. A participle phrase compresses a relative clause - but only when кото́рый is the subject (→ active participle) or the direct object (→ passive participle) of its clause:

  • студе́нт, чита́ющий письмо́ = студе́нт, кото́рый чита́ет письмо́ (active present);
  • студе́нт, прочита́вший письмо́ = кото́рый прочита́л (active past);
  • письмо́, прочи́танное студе́нтом = кото́рое прочита́л студе́нт (passive). The participle agrees with the noun in gender, number and case.

3. Дееприча́стие ↔ subordinate clause. A verbal adverb compresses a time / cause clause, provided both actions share one subject:

  • Прочита́в письмо́, он позвони́л. = Когда́ он прочита́л письмо́… (perfective = “after”);
  • Чита́я письмо́, он улыба́лся. = Пока́ он чита́л… (imperfective = “while”);
  • Не зна́я а́дреса, он заблуди́лся. = Так как он не знал а́дреса… (cause).

4. Nominalisation: clause ↔ verbal noun + preposition. Turn the verb into an отглаго́льное существи́тельное and the subject into a genitive:

  • когда́ он прие́хал → по́сле его́ прие́зда / по прие́зде (formal, по + prepositional);
  • е́сли вы согла́сны → в слу́чае ва́шего согла́сия / при ва́шем согла́сии;
  • что́бы улу́чшить ка́чество → для улучше́ния ка́чества. This is the hallmark of official, scientific and headline style.

5. Conditional ↔ “inverted” condition. Neutral Е́сли бы я знал… can drop е́сли and front the verb: Знай я…, Будь я на твоём ме́сте… The conjunctionless version is more expressive / bookish.

Forms & patterns

One event, three voices:

ConstructionПример / ExampleRegister / note
ActiveРабо́чие постро́или дом.agent = subject (nom.)
Passive (perf., participle)Дом был постро́ен рабо́чими.agent → instrumental; bookish
Indefinite-personal (3 pl.)Дом постро́или.agent dropped; neutral / spoken
Passive (imperf., -ся)Дом стро́ился не́сколько лет.ongoing process

The four paraphrase pairs (compact ↔ explicit):

Compact / bookish↔Explicit / neutral
прича́стие: студе́нт, чита́ющий письмо́↔студе́нт, кото́рый чита́ет письмо́
дееприча́стие: прочита́в письмо́, он…↔когда́ он прочита́л письмо́, он…
номинализа́ция: по́сле прие́зда↔по́сле того́ как он прие́хал
инве́рсия: Знай я…↔Е́сли бы я знал…

Nominalisation - which preposition + which case:

Common mistakes

  • Подъезжа́я к ста́нции, у меня́ слете́ла шля́па -> Когда́ я подъезжа́л к ста́нции, шля́па слете́ла (or Подъезжа́я…, я потеря́л шля́пу) - the дееприча́стие must share the subject of the main clause; a hat can’t “approach the station”.
  • кни́га, чита́ющая мной -> кни́га, кото́рую я чита́ю (or passive чита́емая мной) - an active participle replaces кото́рый only when кото́рый is the subject; чита́ющая would mean “the book that reads”.
  • по прие́зду -> по прие́зде - temporal по (“upon / after”) takes the prepositional case: по оконча́нии, по прибы́тии, по возвраще́нии.
  • Дом был постро́ен рабо́чие -> постро́ен рабо́чими - the agent of a passive goes into the instrumental, never the nominative.
  • для реше́ния вопро́са улучше́ния ка́чества обслу́живания -> better что́бы улу́чшить ка́чество обслу́живания - don’t stack genitive verbal nouns; a long “genitive string” is heavy bureaucratese (канцеляри́т) - unpack it back into a verb.

Tips

  • Same content, pick the shape by register. Spoken / neutral favours кото́рый, indefinite-personal (постро́или) and е́сли бы; written / official favours participles, gerunds, nominalisation and the full participle passive.
  • Participle ↔ кото́рый: swap only when кото́рый is the subject (→ active participle) or the direct object (→ passive participle), and keep the participle agreeing with its noun. чита́ющий = кото́рый чита́ет, прочита́вший = кото́рый прочита́л (active), прочи́танный = кото́рый прочита́ли (passive - кото́рый is the object).
  • Gerund test: ask “one subject for both verbs?” Прочита́в письмо́, он позвони́л (он reads, он calls - OK). If the subjects differ, you must use a когда́ / так как clause instead.
  • Nominalisation = compress a clause into «preposition + verbal noun (+ genitive subject)»: он прие́хал → по́сле его́ прие́зда. Perfect for headlines and official texts - but use a verb again the moment the genitives start piling up.
