Declension of numerals & collective numerals

B2 Склонение числительных; собирательные 48 / 50

In short

Russian numerals decline, and in a compound numeral every word changes (с двумя́ ты́сячами пятьюста́ми рубля́ми). Each group has its own pattern. Collective numerals (дво́е, тро́е, че́тверо…) plus the genitive plural count groups of people, children, plural-only nouns and pronouns; о́ба / о́бе (“both”) also decline.

The rule

There is no “only the last word matters” shortcut here (that rule, step 30, is only about which case the noun takes). Once the whole phrase moves into an oblique case, you must decline each part of the number. The patterns:

  • оди́н declines like the demonstrative э́тот: оди́н / одного́ / одному́ / одни́м / об одно́м; feminine одна́ → одно́й; plural одни́ → одни́х.
  • два / две, три, четы́ре have special forms: gen. двух / трёх / четырёх, dat. двум / трём / четырём, instr. двумя́ / тремя́ / четырьмя́.
  • 5-20 and 30 decline like a 3rd-declension noun in -ь (such as дверь): one oblique form -и (пяти́, двадцати́, тридцати́) and instrumental -ью (пятью́, двадцатью́).
  • 40, 90, 100 have only two forms: nominative/accusative со́рок, девяно́сто, сто vs. every other case сорока́, девяно́ста, ста.
  • 50-80 and 200-900 decline both halves: пяти́десяти, пятью́десятью; пятисо́т, пятиста́м, пятьюста́ми.
  • ты́сяча, миллио́н decline as ordinary nouns (ты́сяча like a feminine -а noun, миллио́н like a masculine noun).

Collective numerals (дво́е, тро́е, че́тверо, пя́теро, ше́стеро, се́меро) take the genitive plural and decline like plural adjectives (двои́х, двои́м, двои́ми). о́ба (m/n) / о́бе (f) “both” keep two stems: обо́- (обо́их) vs. обе́- (обе́их).

Common mistakes

  • с пятьдеся́т рубля́ми -> с пятью́десятью рубля́ми - in 50-80 (and 200-900) both halves decline.
  • о́коло сто киломе́тров -> о́коло ста киломе́тров - 40 / 90 / 100 have a separate oblique form (сорока́, девяно́ста, ста).
  • с двумя́ ты́сячами пятьсо́т -> …пятьюста́ми - in a compound numeral every word changes case, not just the first.
  • дво́е де́вушек -> две де́вушки - collective numerals are not used with female-person nouns; use два / две, пять…
  • два су́ток -> дво́е су́ток - plural-only nouns (су́тки, но́жницы) take a collective numeral, never два/три/четы́ре.

Tips

  • The big idea: decline everything. Stack each part of the number into the same case - двух ты́сяч пятисо́т (gen.), двумя́ ты́сячами пятьюста́ми (instr.).
  • The “easy three” are 40, 90, 100: just remember one extra form each - сорока́, девяно́ста, ста - and you’ve covered every oblique case.
  • Use collective numerals (дво́е, тро́е, че́тверо…) for groups of males, де́ти / лю́ди, young animals (се́меро котя́т), plural-only nouns (тро́е су́ток) and “us/you/them were N” (нас бы́ло пя́теро). For women and things, fall back to два/две, пять…
  • In everyday speech people dodge awkward oblique numerals by rephrasing (приме́рно сто рубле́й, су́мма в 2500 рубле́й), but you must still recognise these forms when reading and listening.
