Functional styles & register
C1 Функциональные стили речи 50 / 50
In short
Russian has five functional styles (функциона́льные сти́ли): colloquial, official-business, academic, journalistic and literary. They differ less in what you say than in the grammar you choose to say it: active vs passive, a participle vs a кото́рый-clause, ну́жно vs необходи́мо, simple prepositions vs derived ones (в тече́ние, в свя́зи с). The C1 skill is reading the situation and producing the register that fits it.
The rule
A functional style is a set of language means a community uses for a recurring situation. The same idea can be dressed in different grammar, and that grammar signals the register to the reader. The five styles:
1. Colloquial / разгово́рный - speech, chat, friendly messages. Markers: ellipsis and incomplete sentences, the pronoun ты, emotional particles (же, ведь, ну, -то, вот), diminutives, free word order. — Ты куда́? — В магази́н. (no verb needed)
2. Official-business / официа́льно-делово́й - laws, contracts, applications, official letters. Markers: verbal nouns (отглаго́льные существи́тельные: предоставле́ние, рассмотре́ние), passives, derived prepositions (в свя́зи с, в соотве́тствии с, на основа́нии, ввиду́), fixed clichés (насто́ящим = hereby, про́сим Вас, дово́дим до све́дения), Вы, no emotion, 1st-person я only in a personal application (заявле́ние).
3. Academic / нау́чный - articles, textbooks, theses. Markers: participles (полу́ченные да́нные), passive / -ся verbs (рассма́тривается, иссле́дуется), strings of genitives (вопро́с формирова́ния структу́ры мо́лекулы), authorial мы and impersonal constructions (безли́чность), precise terms.
4. Journalistic / публицисти́ческий - media, opinion pieces, speeches. Markers: rhetorical questions, appeals to the reader, emotive and evaluative lexis, a deliberate mix of bookish and colloquial means for effect.
5. Literary / худо́жественный - fiction and poetry. It is not “one more register”: it freely borrows from all the others (a clerk’s officialese, a peasant’s dialect) as an artistic device, plus imagery and individual style.
How one grammatical choice marks register. Often you keep the meaning and only switch the form - and that switch is the register:
- active vs passive: Коми́ссия приняла́ реше́ние (neutral) → Реше́ние при́нято коми́ссией (official/academic);
- participle vs кото́рый-clause: студе́нт, сдаю́щий экза́мен (bookish) vs студе́нт, кото́рый сдаёт экза́мен (neutral);
- ну́жно vs необходи́мо: ну́жно прове́рить (neutral/colloquial) vs необходи́мо прове́рить / сле́дует прове́рить (book styles);
- derived vs simple preposition: из-за дождя́ (colloquial) vs в свя́зи с непого́дой / ввиду́ дождя́ (official); во вре́мя vs в тече́ние / в хо́де;
- complete vs elliptical syntax: full clauses in book styles vs clipped, verbless lines in speech.
Forms & patterns
The five styles and their grammatical markers
| Стиль / Style | Где / Where | Grammatical markers | Пример / Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Разгово́рный | speech, chat, texts | ellipsis, particles же/ведь/ну/-то, ты, short & incomplete sentences | Ты же сам всё ви́дел! |

| Нау́чный | articles, textbooks | participles, -ся/passive, genitive chains, а́вторское мы, impersonal | Рассма́тривается влия́ние… |
| Публицисти́ческий | media, speeches | rhetorical questions, appeals, emotive lexis, book + colloquial mix | Кто из нас не мечта́л об э́том? |
| Худо́жественный | fiction, poetry | all means as artistic device, imagery, dialogue | (borrows any of the above) |
The same content across the register scale (neutral → bookish)
| Neutral / colloquial | Bookish (official / academic) | Style it signals |

Examples
| Русский | English |
|---|---|
| — Ко́фе бу́дешь? — Нет, спаси́бо. (разг.) | ”Want some coffee?” “No, thanks.” (ellipsis, ты implied) |
| Ты же сам всё реши́л, заче́м тепе́рь спра́шиваешь? (разг.) | You decided it all yourself, so why ask now? (particle же) |
| В свя́зи с боле́знью сотру́дника собра́ние перено́сится. (офиц.) | Owing to the employee’s illness, the meeting is being postponed. |
| Насто́ящим подтвержда́ем получе́ние Ва́ших докуме́нтов. (офиц.) | We hereby confirm receipt of your documents. |
| В рабо́те рассма́тривается вопро́с формирова́ния структу́ры мо́лекулы. (науч.) | The paper examines the question of the formation of the molecule’s structure. |
| Полу́ченные да́нные позволя́ют сде́лать вы́вод о ро́сте. (науч.) | The obtained data make it possible to draw a conclusion about growth. |
| студе́нт, сдаю́щий экза́мен ≈ студе́нт, кото́рый сдаёт экза́мен | a student taking an exam ≈ a student who is taking an exam (bookish vs neutral) |
| Неуже́ли мы оста́немся в стороне́? (публ.) | Are we really going to stand aside? (rhetorical question) |
Common mistakes
- Здра́вствуй! Ты не мог бы… (to an institution) -> Уважа́емый …! Про́сим Вас… - a business letter needs Вы, no greeting “здра́вствуй”, no colloquial particles.
- Прика́з не вы́полнен
из-заболе́зни -> в свя́зи с / ввиду́ боле́зни - из-за is colloquial (and sounds like blame); documents use derived prepositions. - Я
произвёл откры́тие две́ри-> откры́л дверь - dragging verbal-noun officialese (канцеляри́т) into ordinary speech; use a plain verb. - В докла́де
ну́жноучи́тывать… -> необходи́мо / сле́дует учи́тывать… - ну́жно is neutral-colloquial; academic and official prose prefer необходи́мо/сле́дует. - Speech overloaded with genitive chains and passives -> break them into кото́рый + active verbs - long вопро́с улучше́ния ка́чества обслу́живания населе́ния belongs to book styles, not to a chat.
Tips
- Ask three questions first: who → to whom → where? The situation, not the topic, selects the style. A complaint to a landlord and to a friend share content but not register.
- Diagnostic kit. Passives + verbal nouns + derived prepositions + genitive chains = a book style (official/academic). Ellipsis + particles (же, ведь) + ты = colloquial. Rhetorical questions + emotion = journalistic.
- Two levers you control instantly: active↔passive and кото́рый↔participle. Switch them to move up or down the formality scale without changing the meaning.
- Don’t cross the wires: keep канцеляри́т out of everyday talk, and keep ты / particles / clipped sentences out of a contract.
