Prefixed verbs of motion
B1 Приставочные глаголы движения 41 / 50
In short
Add a prefix to a motion pair (lesson 28) and you get a new verb plus a ready-made aspect pair: prefix + the multidirectional verb (ходи́ть) is imperfective, prefix + the unidirectional verb (идти́) is perfective - приходи́ть [impf] / прийти́ [pf] “to arrive”. Each prefix carries a meaning (arrive, leave, enter…) and pairs with a fixed preposition and case.
The rule
In lesson 28 you met the unprefixed pairs идти́ / ходи́ть and е́хать / е́здить. When you bolt a prefix on the front, the old “one-way vs. round-trip” contrast disappears and is replaced by a normal aspect contrast:
- prefix + unidirectional (идти́, е́хать, бежа́ть…) → perfective (a single completed move): прийти́, прие́хать.
- prefix + multidirectional (ходи́ть, е́здить…) → imperfective (habit, repetition, process): приходи́ть, приезжа́ть.
So you choose the prefix for meaning and the root for aspect. Two spelling points: (1) the е́хать-root becomes -езжа́ть in the imperfective (прие́хать → приезжа́ть); (2) after a consonant-final prefix (в-, под-, от-, об-, с-) a hard sign ъ appears before е/ё: въе́хать, подъе́хать.
Every prefix also “wants” a particular preposition and case, and the prefix often echoes it:

Note / Обрати́те внима́ние: with the prefix вы́- the perfective is always stress-fixed on вы́- (вы́йти, вы́йду, вы́шел), but the imperfective stresses the ending (выходи́ть, выхожу́). And watch сходи́ть: besides being the imperfective of сойти́ (“get off”: сойти́ с по́езда), it is a separate perfective “go somewhere and come back” - схожу́ в магази́н.
Examples
| Русский | English |
|---|---|
| Я обы́чно прихожу́ домо́й по́здно. | I usually come home late. |
| Тури́сты прие́хали из Герма́нии вчера́. | The tourists arrived from Germany yesterday. |
| Он ушёл с рабо́ты ра́ньше обы́чного. | He left work earlier than usual. |
| Войди́те в ко́мнату и сади́тесь. | Come into the room and sit down. |
| Она́ вы́шла из магази́на с су́мками. | She came out of the shop with bags. |
| Подойди́ к окну́ и посмотри́ нару́жу. | Come up to the window and look outside. |
| Мы перешли́ у́лицу по перехо́ду. | We crossed the street at the crossing. |
| По пути́ домо́й я зайду́ к дру́гу. | On the way home I’ll drop by my friend’s. |
Common mistakes
- Ка́ждый день я прийду́ на рабо́ту -> Ка́ждый день я прихожу́ на рабо́ту - prefix + идти́-root is perfective (one time / future); for a habit use the ходи́ть-root. (Also: the future of прийти́ is spelled приду́, no -й-.)
- Она́ вы́шла от до́ма -> Она́ вы́шла из до́ма - вы- (exit) takes из/с + genitive, never от.
- Подойди́ в окно́ -> Подойди́ к окну́ - под- (approach) takes к + dative.
- Я ка́ждое ле́то прие́ду к ба́бушке -> …ка́ждое ле́то приезжа́ю к ба́бушке - е́хать-verbs use -езжа́ть in the imperfective; прие́хать is a single completed trip.
- подехать, отехать -> подъе́хать, отъе́хать - keep the hard sign ъ after a consonant-final prefix before е.
Tips
- Pick prefix for meaning, root for aspect. ходи́ть-root = imperfective (process/habit); идти́-root = perfective (single, completed). по- is special: it has only a perfective form and means “set off / start moving.”
- The prefix usually echoes its preposition: войти́ в, выйти из, подойти́ к, отойти́ от, дойти́ до. Learn them as pairs.
- For transport, the imperfective is -езжа́ть (приезжа́ть, уезжа́ть, заезжа́ть). After в-, под-, от-, об-, с- insert ъ: въезжа́ть, подъе́хать, съе́хать.
- Don’t confuse зайти́ “drop by, stop in” with simply arriving: я зашёл в апте́ку (stopped in on the way) vs. я пришёл домо́й (reached the final destination).
