Choosing aspect in context
B1 Употребление видов глагола 40 / 50
In short
You already know each verb has an imperfective (НСВ) and a perfective (СВ) partner (lesson 21). Now you learn which one to pick. Use the imperfective for a process, a habit, or a general fact; use the perfective for one completed result or a chain of completed steps. Negation flips the feel: не + НСВ = “didn’t do it at all”, не + СВ = “didn’t manage / not yet”.
The rule
The same event can be told two ways. Ask yourself: am I describing a process / habit / fact, or a single result?
Use the IMPERFECTIVE (НСВ) for:
- A process in progress - the action unfolding, often with весь день / до́лго / в э́тот моме́нт: Я чита́л весь ве́чер (I was reading all evening - no claim that I finished).
- Repetition or habit - with ча́сто, обы́чно, ка́ждый день, всегда́, иногда́: Я ча́сто пишу́ пи́сьма (I often write letters).
- A general fact or experience - “did it happen / have you ever…”, naming the activity itself, not its completion: Ты чита́л «Войну́ и мир»? (Have you read War and Peace? = are you familiar with it).
- After a phase verb - нача́ть, продолжа́ть, зако́нчить, переста́ть always take an imperfective infinitive: Он на́чал чита́ть (he started reading). A process can begin, continue or stop; a finished result cannot.
Use the PERFECTIVE (СВ) for:
- A single completed result - the action is done and there is an outcome: Я прочита́л кни́гу (I read the book = finished it).
- A sequence of completed actions - one step, then the next, then the next: Я встал, поза́втракал и ушёл (I got up, had breakfast and left).
- A one-time future or past result: За́втра я куплю́ биле́т (tomorrow I’ll buy a ticket - one act, done).
The same context, two viewpoints. Keep the rest of the sentence fixed and only swap the aspect:
| Russian | Viewpoint |
|---|---|
| Вчера́ я де́лал дома́шнее зада́ние. | I was working on the homework (process; maybe unfinished). |
| Вчера́ я сде́лал дома́шнее зада́ние. | I did / finished the homework (result, it’s ready). |
Negation nuance. Negating changes which aspect you want:
| Russian | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Я не чита́л э́то. | I didn’t read it (at all) / I’m not familiar with it. (не + НСВ) |
| Я (ещё) не прочита́л э́то. | I haven’t finished it (yet). (не + СВ) |
Forms & patterns
Quick decision table - match the meaning to the aspect:
| Meaning / Значе́ние | Aspect | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Process in progress | НСВ | Я чита́л весь ве́чер. |
| Repetition / habit | НСВ | Я ча́сто пишу́ пи́сьма. |
| General fact / “ever?” | НСВ | Ты чита́л э́ту кни́гу? |
| After a phase verb | НСВ inf. | Он на́чал чита́ть. |
| Single completed result | СВ | Я прочита́л кни́гу. |
| Sequence of results | СВ | Я встал и ушёл. |
| One-off future result | СВ | Я куплю́ биле́т. |
Phase verbs always take an imperfective infinitive:
| Phase verb (НСВ / СВ) | Meaning | Followed by |
|---|---|---|
| начина́ть / нача́ть | to begin | + imperfective inf. |
| продолжа́ть | to continue | + imperfective inf. |
| зака́нчивать / зако́нчить | to finish | + imperfective inf. |
| перестава́ть / переста́ть | to stop | + imperfective inf. |
So: Он на́чал писа́ть (not написа́ть), Она́ переста́ла кури́ть (not закури́ть).
Examples
| Русский | English |
|---|---|
| Я чита́л весь ве́чер и не заме́тил вре́мени. | I was reading all evening and didn’t notice the time. (process - НСВ) |
| Я ча́сто пишу́ пи́сьма ба́бушке. | I often write letters to my grandma. (habit - НСВ) |
| Ты чита́л «Войну́ и мир»? | Have you (ever) read War and Peace? (general fact - НСВ) |
| Он на́чал чита́ть но́вый рома́н. | He started reading a new novel. (phase verb + НСВ) |
| Я прочита́л э́ту кни́гу за два дня. | I read (finished) this book in two days. (result - СВ) |
| Я встал, поза́втракал и ушёл на рабо́ту. | I got up, had breakfast and left for work. (sequence - СВ) |
| За́втра я куплю́ биле́ты и закажу́ такси́. | Tomorrow I’ll buy the tickets and order a taxi. (future result - СВ) |
| Я ещё не прочита́л статью́, дай мне час. | I haven’t finished the article yet, give me an hour. (не + СВ) |
Common mistakes
- Ка́ждый день я прочита́л газе́ту -> ка́ждый день я чита́л / чита́ю газе́ту - a repeated, habitual action is imperfective; ка́ждый день signals НСВ.
- Он на́чал написа́ть письмо́ -> Он на́чал писа́ть письмо́ - phase verbs (нача́ть, продолжа́ть, зако́нчить, переста́ть) take the imperfective infinitive.
- Я встал, за́втракал и ушёл -> Я встал, поза́втракал и ушёл - in a chain of single completed steps every verb is perfective.
- Я не прочита́л э́ту кни́гу (meaning “I’ve never read it”) -> Я не чита́л э́ту кни́гу - “didn’t read at all / not familiar” is не + НСВ; не прочита́л means only “haven’t finished it yet”.
- Я де́лал дома́шнее зада́ние, тепе́рь свобо́ден -> Я сде́лал дома́шнее зада́ние, тепе́рь свобо́ден - if you claim a finished result (“now I’m free”), use the perfective.
Tips
- One question decides almost everything: process / habit / fact -> НСВ; single result or chain of results -> СВ.
- Memory hook for phase verbs: a process can begin, continue, or stop, so нача́ть / продолжа́ть / переста́ть only ever attach to the imperfective infinitive.
- Negation rule of thumb: не + НСВ = “I didn’t do it (at all)”; не + СВ = “I didn’t manage / not yet” - add ещё (“yet”) to make the perfective sense clear.
- Watch the signal words: весь день, до́лго, ча́сто, обы́чно, ка́ждый день, всегда́ pull НСВ; пото́м, сра́зу, уже́, наконе́ц, за час pull СВ.
