In short
Determinative pronouns point to a thing as a whole or single it out: сам “(one)self, in person”, весь “all / the whole”, ка́ждый “each”, любо́й “any”, вся́кий “every kind of”, друго́й “(an)other”. They agree in gender, number and case like adjectives. Don’t confuse the emphatic сам “-self” with са́мый “the very / the most” from lesson 33.
The rule
1. сам - “-self” (emphatic). It stresses that this very person/thing, and no one else, does the action - or does it in person / without help. It agrees with the noun and declines:
- Я сам э́то сде́лал. - I did it myself.
- Она́ сама́ реши́ла. - She decided herself.
- Дире́ктор сам пришёл. - The director came in person.
Do not confuse it with са́мый (lesson 33), which means “the very / the most” and builds the superlative: са́мый большо́й го́род “the biggest city”, тот са́мый челове́к “that very/exact person”, в са́мом нача́ле “at the very beginning”. Compare the stress and meaning: сам (no help) vs са́мый (degree).
2. весь / вся / всё / все - “all / the whole”. It declines (with mixed soft endings). Two forms are also independent words:
- всё = “everything” (neuter): Всё гото́во. - Everything is ready.
- все = “everybody” (plural): Все уже́ зна́ют. - Everybody already knows.
Otherwise it means “the whole / all the”: весь день “the whole day”, всю ночь “all night”, во всём ми́ре “in the whole world”, все лю́ди “all people”.
3. ка́ждый / любо́й / вся́кий - “each / any / every kind”. All three decline like adjectives but differ in meaning:
- ка́ждый = each (every single member, taken one by one): ка́ждый студе́нт “each student”, ка́ждый день “every day”.
- любо́й = any (you like) (free choice): возьми́ любу́ю кни́гу “take any book”.
- вся́кий = every kind of / all sorts of: вся́кий раз “every time”, вся́кие лю́ди “all kinds of people”.
4. друго́й - “other / another”. Declines like an adjective: друго́й го́род “another city”, в друго́й раз “another time”, на друго́й день “the next day”.

ка́ждый, любо́й, вся́кий, друго́й decline like ordinary adjectives (see lesson 12): ка́ждый - ка́ждого - ка́ждому…; любо́й - любо́го - любо́му…; вся́кий - вся́кого…; друго́й - друго́го - друго́му… .

Common mistakes
- Я са́мый сде́лал -> Я сам сде́лал - “-self” is сам; са́мый means “the most / the very”.
- Он сам молодо́й -> Он са́мый молодо́й - superlative needs са́мый, not сам.
- Я говори́л с сам дире́ктором -> с сами́м дире́ктором - сам must decline (instrumental сами́м).
- Всё пришли́ -> Все пришли́ - “everybody” is все (plural); всё is “everything” (neuter sg).
- Я хожу́ туда́ любо́й день -> ка́ждый день - routine “every day” is ка́ждый; любо́й = “any (you choose)”.
Tips
- Memory hook: сам = the person in person (no help); са́мый = the degree (the most / the very). Different stress, different job.
- всё ends in -ё = “everything” (one neuter thing); все = “everybody” (many people).
- ка́ждый picks members one by one; любо́й offers free choice; вся́кий sweeps up “all sorts of”. When unsure for routines (“every day, every time”), use ка́ждый.
- сам keeps end stress when it grows endings: самого́, самому́, сами́м, само́м - stress the ending in every oblique form; only the plural са́ми - nominative, and the accusative that copies it - keeps stem stress (мы са́ми).
