Indefinite pronouns (-то / -нибудь)

B1 Неопределённые местоимения 38 / 50

In short

Add a particle to a question word (кто, что, где…) to make it indefinite: -то = a specific but unnamed thing that really exists (the speaker just can’t or won’t identify it - someone called); -нибудь = any, no matter which, used in questions, requests, future and imperatives (does anyone know?); кое- = a certain one the speaker has in mind. The question-word part declines; the particle is glued on and never changes.

The rule

1. -то = real but unidentified. The thing, person or place definitely exists; the speaker simply doesn’t (or can’t) name it. Typical with past / present statements about something that happened:

  • Кто́-то звони́л. - Someone called. (a real person did - I just don’t know who)
  • Он что́-то сказа́л. - He said something. (he did say a specific thing)
  • Я где́-то ви́дел его́. - I’ve seen him somewhere. (a real place, I forget which)

2. -нибудь = any, non-specific, hypothetical. Maybe such a thing exists, maybe not, and it doesn’t matter which one. It lives in the world of questions, requests, the future, imperatives and conditions:

  • Кто́-нибудь до́ма? - Is anyone home? (question)
  • Дай мне что́-нибудь почита́ть. - Give me something (anything) to read. (request)
  • Позвони́ кому́-нибудь. - Call someone (whoever). (imperative)
  • Я что́-нибудь приду́маю. - I’ll think of something. (future, not yet decided)

3. кое- = a certain specific one I have in mind. The speaker knows exactly what it is but isn’t naming it yet (often “something I’ll tell you” / “a few people”):

  • Мне ну́жно сказа́ть тебе́ ко́е-что́. - I need to tell you a certain thing.
  • Ко́е-кто́ уже́ зна́ет об э́том. - A certain someone already knows about it.

4. The pattern is regular. Take a question word and add the particle: кто, что, како́й, чей, где, когда́, куда́, как. The interrogative root keeps its meaning; the particle sets the “indefinite flavour”.

5. The first part declines. кто-/что- change by case exactly like plain кто/что (lesson 6); the particle is just stuck on the end and stays fixed:

  • Я говори́л с ке́м-то. - I spoke with someone. (instrumental)
  • Он ду́мает о чём-нибудь прия́тном. - He’s thinking about something pleasant. (prepositional)
  • Дай э́то кому́-нибудь. - Give it to someone. (dative)

(For the negative pronouns никто́ “no one” / ничто́ “nothing”, see lesson 17 - they are a separate set.)

Forms & patterns

The whole family - one row per question word:

Root-то (specific, unnamed)-нибудь (any)кое- (a certain)
ктокто́-токто́-нибудько́е-кто́
чточто́-точто́-нибудько́е-что́
како́йкако́й-токако́й-нибудько́е-како́й
чейче́й-точе́й-нибудь—
гдегде́-тогде́-нибудько́е-где́
когда́когда́-токогда́-нибудь—
куда́куда́-токуда́-нибудько́е-куда́
какка́к-тока́к-нибудько́е-ка́к*

* ко́е-ка́к has drifted to a fixed adverb meaning “carelessly / barely, sloppily” (Он сде́лал э́то ко́е-ка́к - he did it any old how).

Declension of кто-то / что-то (the particle -то/-нибудь/кое- never changes; кого́-нибудь, чему́-нибудь work the same way):

Case / Падежкто-…что-…
Nom.кто́-точто́-то
Gen.кого́-точего́-то
Dat.кому́-точему́-то
Acc.кого́-точто́-то
Instr.ке́м-точе́м-то
Prep.(о) ко́м-то(о) чём-то

како́й-то / како́й-нибудь decline like an adjective and agree with their noun: како́й-то дом, кака́я-то же́нщина, каки́е-то лю́ди, в како́м-то го́роде.

кое- + preposition splits up: the preposition slips between the parts, and the hyphens disappear: ко́е с ке́м (with a certain someone), ко́е о чём (about a certain thing), ко́е у кого́ (at a certain someone’s).

Examples

РусскийEnglish
Тебе́ кто́-то звони́л, пока́ ты спал.Someone called you while you were asleep.
Кто́-нибудь зна́ет, где вы́ход?Does anyone know where the exit is?
Он что́-то прошепта́л, но я не расслы́шал.He whispered something, but I didn’t catch it.
Дай мне что́-нибудь попи́ть.Give me something to drink.
Я где́-то оста́вил свои́ ключи́.I left my keys somewhere.
Дава́й встре́тимся когда́-нибудь на сле́дующей неде́ле.Let’s meet sometime next week.

Я обсуди́л э́то с ке́м-то из колле́г.I discussed it with someone among the colleagues.

Common mistakes

  • Вчера́ мне кто́-нибудь звони́л -> Вчера́ мне кто́-то звони́л - a real, completed event needs -то; -нибудь would mean a hypothetical “anyone at all”.
  • Ты ви́дел кого́-то? (asking in general) -> Ты ви́дел кого́-нибудь? - in a yes/no question about “anyone at all”, use -нибудь.
  • Я говори́л с кто́-то -> Я говори́л с ке́м-то - the first part must take the right case (here instrumental).
  • Расскажи́ мне что́-то интере́сное (you want anything) -> Расскажи́ мне что́-нибудь интере́сное - a request for “anything” is -нибудь; что́-то would mean you already have one specific story in mind.
  • кто то, что нибудь (no hyphen) -> кто́-то, что́-нибудь - -то, -нибудь and кое- are always attached with a hyphen.

Tips

  • -то = “it’s THERE, I just don’t know WHICH.” -нибудь = “ANY one will do - or maybe none.” That one image sorts out most cases.
  • -нибудь loves the irrealis: questions, requests/imperatives, the future, conditions and repeated/habitual actions (Он всегда́ что́-нибудь забыва́ет - he’s always forgetting something).
  • Decline the head, glue the tail. Change only кто/что/како́й (кого́-то, ке́м-нибудь, в каку́ю-нибудь); -то / -нибудь / кое- never inflect.
  • кое- = “I have a particular one in mind.” Mind the split with prepositions: ко́е с ке́м, ко́е о чём - written as three words, no hyphens.
