Word formation (prefixes & suffixes)

B1 Словообразование 42 / 50

In short

Russian builds words from a root plus prefixes (front) and suffixes (back): пис- → писа́ть, письмо́, писа́тель, запи́ска, по́дпись. Learn to spot the root and to read the affixes - the suffix usually tells you the part of speech (-ость, -ение, -тель → noun; -н-, -ск-, -лив- → adjective), and the prefix shifts the meaning (не- “not”, без-/бес- “without”, пере- “re-/over”). One known root unlocks a whole family of words.

The rule

1. Root + affixes. A Russian word is typically prefix + root + suffix + ending: за-пи́с-к-а. The root carries the core meaning; everything else modifies it. If you recognise the root, you can often guess a word you have never seen.

2. Find the root across a family. The same root appears in many words; the consonant may alternate slightly:

пис-/пиш-: писа́ть (to write), письмо́ (letter), писа́тель (writer), запи́ска (note), по́дпись (signature), пи́сьменный (written).

3. Noun suffixes - the ending of a noun tells you what kind of thing it is:

  • -тель / -итель - the agent (one who does it): учи́ть → учи́тель, писа́ть → писа́тель, стро́ить → строи́тель.
  • -ник / -ница - a person by job or trait (ница = feminine): рабо́тник / рабо́тница (worker), ху́дожник (artist).
  • -ость - an abstract quality from an adjective: ра́дость (joy), мо́лодость (youth), но́вость (news). All -ость nouns are feminine (3rd declension).
  • -ение / -ание - a verbal noun (the action itself): образова́ние (education), чте́ние (reading), реше́ние (decision), зада́ние (task).
  • -ство - a state or collective quality: де́тство (childhood), бога́тство (wealth), ка́чество (quality).
  • -ка - feminine of a person or a diminutive: студе́нт → студе́нтка, рука́ → ру́чка (little hand / pen), кни́га → кни́жка.

4. Adjective suffixes:

  • -н- - the general “related to” adjective: вку́сный, мо́дный, у́мный.
  • -ск- / -ческ- - belonging / “-ic” (-ческ- after -ия, -ика): ру́сский, городско́й, истори́ческий.
  • -ов- / -ев- - “made of / -en”: дубо́вый (oak-), фрукто́вый (fruit-).
  • -ист- - “full of, -ish”: золоти́стый (golden), волни́стый (wavy).
  • -лив- - “inclined to”: счастли́вый (happy), терпели́вый (patient), дождли́вый (rainy).

5. Diminutives & augmentatives. Suffixes change size and attitude, not meaning: дом → до́мик (little house, affectionate) → доми́ще (huge house). Diminutives use -ик / -ок / -к- / -очк-; augmentatives use -ищ-.

6. Prefixes shift meaning:

  • не- - “not” (negation), written together with adjectives/nouns: непра́вильный, неинтере́сный.
  • без- / бес- - “without”: безопа́сный (safe = danger-free), бесполе́зный (useless), беспла́тный (free).
  • пере- - “re- / over-”: переписа́ть (rewrite), пересоли́ть (over-salt).
  • про- - “through / to completion”: прочита́ть (read through), проспа́ть (oversleep).
  • под- - “under / approach / sub-”: подписа́ть (sign), подойти́ (approach), подзаголо́вок (subtitle).

7. Spelling rule for з/с prefixes. In без-/бес-, раз-/рас-, из-/ис-, воз-/вос- write з before a voiced sound or vowel, с before a voiceless one: безопа́сный but бесполе́зный, разби́ть but расска́з.

8. Aspectual prefixes. Many prefixes also turn an imperfective verb into a perfective (see lesson 21): де́лать → сде́лать, писа́ть → написа́ть, чита́ть → прочита́ть.

9. Compounding joins two roots with the linking vowel о/е: сам + лета́ть → самолёт (airplane), пар + ход → парохо́д (steamship), пеш + ход → пешехо́д (pedestrian), вод + пад → водопа́д (waterfall).

РусскийEnglish
Все э́ти слова́ - от ко́рня пис-: писа́ть, письмо́, писа́тель.These words all share the root пис-: to write, letter, writer.
Су́ффикс -тель де́лает из глаго́ла «де́ятеля»: учи́ть → учи́тель.The suffix -тель turns a verb into an agent: to teach → teacher.
От прилага́тельного образу́ется ка́чество на -ость: но́вый → но́вость.From an adjective you get a quality in -ость: new → news.
Приста́вка не- де́лает сло́во отрица́тельным: пра́вильный → непра́вильный.The prefix не- makes a word negative: correct → incorrect.
Без-/бес- зна́чит «без чего́-то»: безопа́сный, бесполе́зный.Без-/бес- means “without”: safe (danger-free), useless.
Приста́вка пере- ча́сто зна́чит «сно́ва»: на́до переписа́ть письмо́.The prefix пере- often means “again”: the letter needs rewriting.
Уме́ньшим разме́р: дом → до́мик; уве́личим: дом → доми́ще.Shrink it: house → little house; enlarge it: house → huge house.
Два ко́рня даю́т сло́жное сло́во: сам + лета́ть = самолёт.Two roots make a compound word: self + to fly = airplane.

Common mistakes

  • безполе́зный / безпла́тный -> бесполе́зный, беспла́тный - before a voiceless consonant the prefix is бес- (з → с).
  • разсказа́ть / изпра́вить -> рассказа́ть, испра́вить - same з/с rule: с before a voiceless sound (с, п, к, т…).
  • не пра́вильный (one negative word) -> непра́вильный - не- joins adjectives/nouns; but with verbs не stays separate: не зна́ю.
  • treating ра́дость as masculine -> ра́дость is feminine - every -ость noun is feminine, 3rd declension: больша́я ра́дость, нет ра́дости.
  • учи́тиль / строи́тиль -> учи́тель, строи́тель - the agent suffix is -тель with е, never -тиль.

Tips

  • Find the root first. Strip off prefixes and suffixes - one known root (пис-, уч-, дом-) opens a whole family of related words.
  • Read the tail. The suffix usually gives the part of speech: -ость/-ение/-тель → noun, -н-/-ск-/-лив- → adjective. Guess an unknown word’s type from its ending.
  • Say the з/с rule aloud: з before a voiced sound or vowel, с before a voiceless one (безопа́сный, бесполе́зный). Your tongue already wants to match them.
  • Remember that prefixes also build perfectives (lesson 21): де́лать → сде́лать, писа́ть → написа́ть.
