In short

The Russian conditional is just the particle бы (or б) + the past-tense form of the verb. It is tenseless: one form covers would and would have, for any person and any time - Я бы хоте́л ко́фе (I’d like - polite), Е́сли бы я знал, я бы сказа́л (if I had known, I’d have said). For unreal “if”, use е́сли бы + past in the if-part and бы + past in the main part. For purpose/wish, что́бы takes an infinitive (same subject) or a past form (different subjects).

The rule

1. The formula: бы + past. There is no special verb form to learn. Take the past tense (lesson 15) and add the unchanging particle бы. The past form still agrees in gender and number (он сказа́л / она́ сказа́ла / они́ сказа́ли); бы never changes:

Я бы сказа́л пра́вду. Она́ бы сказа́ла. Мы бы сказа́ли.

2. It is tenseless. The same бы-form means both would and would have - context and time words decide. Я бы помо́г can be “I would help (now/later)” or “I would have helped (then).”

3. бы attaches to the focus. бы usually stands right after the first stressed word or after the verb. Move it to highlight a different word:

• Я бы сде́лал э́то. - I would do it.
• Я сде́лал бы э́то. - neutral.
• Я бы сего́дня сде́лал. - I’d do it today.

After a vowel, бы often shrinks to б in speech: Я б сказа́л.

4. Polite softener. бы turns a blunt statement into a polite one: Я бы хоте́л ко́фе (I’d like) is softer than Я хочу́ ко́фе. The set phrase На твоём / ва́шем ме́сте я бы… = “in your place I would…”, and Не могли́ бы вы…? = “Could you…?”

5. Unreal conditions (е́сли бы …, … бы). For a hypothetical or impossible “if”, use бы in both halves: е́сли бы + past in the if-clause and бы + past in the main clause:

Е́сли бы я знал, я бы сказа́л. - If I had known / knew, I would have said / would say.

Compare the real condition (lesson 19): a genuinely possible situation takes plain е́сли + present/future, NO бы:

Е́сли бу́дет вре́мя, я приду́. - If there’s time, I’ll come.

6. что́бы (что + бы) = purpose / wish. Pick the form by the subjects:

• Same subject → infinitive: Я пришёл, что́бы помо́чь. (I came in order to help.)
• Different subjects → past: Я хочу́, что́бы ты пришёл. (I want you to come.)

что́бы is one word, written together; the comma comes before it (lesson 19).

Common mistakes

• Я бы хочу́ ко́фе -> Я бы хоте́л ко́фе - бы always takes the past form, never the present.
• Е́сли бы бу́дет вре́мя… -> Е́сли бы бы́ло вре́мя… - after е́сли бы use the past, not the future (the future, no бы, is the real condition: Е́сли бу́дет вре́мя…).
• Е́сли бы я знал, я сказа́л -> Е́сли бы я знал, я бы сказа́л - the main clause also needs бы; don’t drop it.
• Я хочу́, что́бы ты придёшь -> Я хочу́, что́бы ты пришёл - after что́бы with a different subject use the past, not present/future.
• Я пришёл, что́бы я помо́г -> Я пришёл, что́бы помо́чь - same subject → infinitive, not что́бы + past.
• Е́сли я бы знал -> Е́сли бы я знал - in the if-clause бы sits right after е́сли.

Tips

• One form fits all: бы + past tense = both “would” and “would have.” Time words and context tell you which - the verb stays the same.
• Unreal “if” has two бы: Е́сли бы …, … бы …. Real “if” has none: Е́сли + бу́дущее. The бы count instantly tells the two apart.
• что́бы test: ask “who does the second action?” Same person → infinitive (что́бы сде́лать); a new person → past (что́бы ты сде́лал).
• For politeness, reach for бы: Я бы хоте́л…, Не могли́ бы вы…?, На ва́шем ме́сте я бы… - all far softer than the plain verb.
