Noun declension (the three patterns)
A2 Склонение существительных 29 / 50
In short
Every Russian noun follows one of three declension patterns, chosen by its nominative ending. 1st: feminine and a few masculine nouns in -а/-я (кни́га, неде́ля, па́па). 2nd: masculine in a consonant or -й and neuter in -о/-е (стол, музе́й, окно́). 3rd: feminine in -ь (ночь, дверь, мать). Within each pattern a hard or soft stem just swaps the ending vowel (-ом/-ем, -ы/-и, …).
The rule
Step 1 - find the declension from the nominative. This brings together the endings from lessons 8-11 (nom, prep, acc, gen) and 22-23 (dat, instr) into three tidy tables.
| Decl. | What goes here | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | fem. -а/-я; natural-masc. -а/-я (decline the same, agree as masculine) | кни́га, неде́ля, па́па, мужчи́на |
| 2nd | masc. in a consonant or -й/-ь; neuter -о/-е | стол, музе́й, слова́рь, окно́, мо́ре |
| 3rd | feminine in -ь | ночь, дверь, мать, дочь |
Step 2 - hard or soft stem. The two stems take the same set of endings; only the vowel changes - hard picks о / ы / у / ой, soft picks е / и / ю / ей:
-ом / -ем (instr.) · -ой / -ей (instr. fem.) · -ы / -и (gen. fem.) · -у / -ю (acc./dat.)
Step 3 - apply two spelling rules that override the “hard” choice:
- After к г х ж ч ш щ write -и, never -ы: кни́га → кни́ги (not кни́гы).
- After hushers ж ч ш щ ц, an unstressed ending takes е, not о: с му́жем, с ме́сяцем - but stressed stays о: отцо́м, ножо́м.
Step 4 - watch for fleeting (mobile) vowels. A final -е-/-о- in some stems drops out as soon as an ending is added: оте́ц → отца́, день → дня, у́гол → угла́. (The reverse inserts a vowel in the zero-ending genitive plural: де́вушка → де́вушек.)
Forms & patterns
1st declension - singular (hard кни́га / soft неде́ля; па́па declines like кни́га):
| Case | hard: кни́га | soft: неде́ля |
|---|---|---|
| Nom | кни́га | неде́ля |
| Gen | кни́ги * | неде́ли |
| Dat | кни́ге | неде́ле |
| Acc | кни́гу | неде́лю |
| Instr | кни́гой | неде́лей |
| Prep | о кни́ге | о неде́ле |
* The plain hard genitive ending is -ы (рабо́та → рабо́ты); кни́ги has -и only because of the к/г/х spelling rule.
2nd declension - singular (masc.
Neuter Acc always equals Nom. For animate masculine nouns Acc equals Gen: студе́нт → ви́жу студе́нта (lesson 11).
3rd declension - singular (all feminine in -ь):
| Case | ночь | дверь | мать (-ер-) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nom | ночь | дверь | мать |
| Gen | но́чи | две́ри | ма́тери |
| Dat | но́чи | две́ри | ма́тери |
| Acc | ночь | дверь | мать |
| Instr | но́чью | две́рью | ма́терью |
| Prep | о но́чи | о две́ри | о ма́тери |
In the 3rd declension Gen = Dat = Prep (all -и) and the instrumental is -ью. Мать and дочь insert -ер- in every case but the nominative/accusative (мать → ма́тери, дочь → до́чери).
Plural endings - overview. The dative, instrumental and prepositional plural are the same for every noun; only Nom and Gen plural vary by type (the genitive plural gets its own lesson 30).
Memory anchor: -ам / -ами / -ах (soft -ям / -ями / -ях) end the dat/instr/prep plural of absolutely everything.
Examples

|---|---|

| Он купи́л биле́т в музе́й. | He bought a ticket to the museum. |
| Мы живём недалеко́ от мо́ря. | We live not far from the sea. |
| Ве́чером я чита́ю до́чери ска́зку. | In the evening I read my daughter a fairy tale. |
| Я горжу́сь свое́й ма́терью. | I am proud of my mother. |
| Я написа́л письмо́ отцу́. | I wrote a letter to my father. |
| Весь день мы говори́ли о рабо́те. | We talked about work all day. |
Common mistakes
- кни́гы -> кни́ги - after к/г/х/ж/ч/ш/щ you must write -и, never -ы (spelling rule).
- с му́жом -> с му́жем - after a husher an unstressed instrumental ending is -ем, not -ом.
- оте́ца -> отца́ - оте́ц has a fleeting -е- that drops in every oblique case (and the ending is stressed: -а́).
- о две́рью -> о две́ри - in the 3rd declension the prepositional is -и; the -ью form is the instrumental.
- мно́го де́вушков -> мно́го де́вушек - feminine -а nouns take a zero genitive-plural ending (with an inserted vowel), not -ов.
Tips
- Read the nominative ending and the type is decided: -а/-я → 1st, consonant/-й/-о/-е → 2nd, fem. -ь → 3rd. Everything else follows from the table.
- For hard vs soft, just pick the matching vowel from each pair: hard о/ы/у/ой, soft е/и/ю/ей - same slot, different vowel.
- One free win: dat/instr/prep plural are identical for the whole language - learn -ам, -ами, -ах once and you have 3 forms for every noun.
- Suspect a fleeting vowel whenever a noun ends in -ец, -ок, -ень: the last vowel usually disappears in the oblique cases (оте́ц→отца́, плато́к→платка́, день→дня).
