Verb government (rekcja)

B2 Rekcja czasownika 46 / 52

In short

Just as a preposition owns the case of the noun after it, a Polish verb owns the case of its object. This is verb government (rekcja czasownika). Most verbs take a plain accusative object, but a large group demands the genitive, the dative, or the instrumental instead - with no preposition at all - and many others require a fixed preposition + case combination. The case is a property of the verb, so you must memorize each verb together with the case (or preposition) it governs, exactly the way English learners memorize “listen to” or “depend on”.

The rule

A verb assigns a fixed case to its complement. Change the case and you either change the meaning or produce a plain error. There are four things to keep straight.

Bare-case government (no preposition)

Many verbs put their object straight into a case other than the accusative. The most productive patterns:

  • Genitive verbs - “seeking, needing, avoiding, and perception of sound”: szukać (look for), potrzebować (need), słuchać (listen to), używać (use), uczyć się (learn), bać się (be afraid of), unikać (avoid), wymagać (require), życzyć (wish), zapominać (forget), dotyczyć (concern), brakować (be lacking). Note that słuchać and używać take the genitive where English uses “to”/“of”.
  • Dative verbs - “help, thank, trust, hinder, and directed attention”: pomagać (help), dziękować (thank), ufać (trust), wierzyć (believe), przeszkadzać (disturb), sprzyjać (favour), towarzyszyć (accompany), kibicować (root for), przyglądać się (watch closely), dziwić się (be surprised at).
  • Instrumental verbs - “occupation with, care of, and control”: interesować się (be interested in), zajmować się (deal with), opiekować się (take care of), kierować (steer / manage), rządzić (rule), plus the predicate use of być and zostać (be / become + instrumental).

The genitive of negation

When you negate a verb whose object is in the accusative, that object switches to the genitive. This is automatic and obligatory.

  • Mam czas. (accusative) -> Nie mam czasu. (genitive)
  • Piję kawę. -> Nie piję kawy.

Verbs that already govern the genitive, dative or instrumental do not change under negation - only accusative objects do.

Prepositional government (verb + preposition + case)

A huge class of verbs binds a specific preposition, and that preposition carries its own case (see lesson 17). Learn the whole chain verb + preposition + case as one unit, because it rarely matches the English preposition:

  • czekać na + accusative (wait for), patrzeć na + accusative (look at)
  • myśleć o + locative (think about), rozmawiać o + locative (talk about)
  • prosić o + accusative (ask for), pytać o + accusative (ask about), dbać o + accusative (care for)
  • martwić się o + accusative (worry about), wierzyć w + accusative (believe in)
  • zależeć od + genitive (depend on), korzystać z + genitive (make use of), rezygnować z + genitive (give up), składać się z + genitive (consist of)
  • zależeć na + locative (care about - impersonal: zależy mi na tobie)

Government can shift the meaning

Some verbs govern more than one pattern, and the case or preposition disambiguates:

  • bać się + genitive = fear a thing (boję się psa) vs bać się o + accusative = worry about someone (boję się o dziecko).
  • grać w + accusative = play a game (grać w karty) vs grać na + locative = play an instrument (grać na gitarze).

Common mistakes

  • słucham muzykę -> słucham muzyki - słuchać governs the genitive, not the accusative.
  • pomagam matkę -> pomagam matce - pomagać takes the dative; “help” is not a plain object.
  • interesuję się historię -> interesuję się historią - interesować się requires the instrumental.
  • nie mam czas -> nie mam czasu - negation flips the accusative object to the genitive.
  • czekam autobus -> czekam na autobus - czekać needs the preposition na + accusative.
  • dziękuję cię -> dziękuję ci - dziękować is a dative verb; use the dative pronoun.
  • zależy od pogodę -> zależy od pogody - od governs the genitive, so pogoda becomes pogody.
  • myślę o wakacje -> myślę o wakacjach - myśleć o takes the locative, not the accusative.

Tips

  • Store every new verb as a frame: not szukać but “szukać + genitive”, not czekać but “czekać na + accusative”. The case is part of the word.
  • Three big bare-case families are worth memorizing as a block: seeking / needing / hearing -> genitive (szukać, potrzebować, słuchać), helping / thanking / trusting -> dative (pomagać, dziękować, ufać), being busy with / caring for -> instrumental (zajmować się, opiekować się, interesować się).
  • Reflexive -ować się verbs of engagement almost all take the instrumental: zajmować się, interesować się, opiekować się, cieszyć się (though cieszyć się z + genitive for a cause).
  • The genitive of negation is mechanical: if a nie appears in front of a verb with an accusative object, retag that object as genitive - every time.
  • When the Polish preposition surprises you, it usually will not match English: czekać na (wait for), zależeć od (depend on), pytać o (ask about). Learn the pair, not a translation.
  • Predicate być and zostać put the noun in the instrumental: jestem studentem, zostałem inżynierem - never the nominative.
