Participles and gerunds
B2 Imiesłowy i rzeczownik odczasownikowy 47 / 52
In short
Polish squeezes a lot out of the verb by turning it into other parts of speech. From one verb you can build an adjective (czytający - “reading”, czytany - “read/being read”), an adverb (czytając - “while reading”, przeczytawszy - “having read”) and a noun (czytanie - “reading”). These are the imiesłowy (participles) and the rzeczownik odczasownikowy (verbal noun). They let you pack a whole clause into a single word, which is exactly why they dominate written and formal Polish. Aspect (Lesson 20) decides which participle a given verb can form.
The rule
Polish has four participles plus a verbal noun. Two are adjectival (they decline for gender, number and case), two are adverbial (they never change), and the verbal noun is a full neuter noun.
1. Active adjectival participle (imiesłów przymiotnikowy czynny) - “-ący”
Formed only from imperfective verbs. Take the 3rd person plural present, drop -ą, add -ący: czytają -> czytający, piszą -> piszący, idą -> idący. It means “the one who is (currently) doing” and behaves like a normal adjective, agreeing with its noun: czytający chłopiec, czytająca dziewczyna, czytające dziecko.
2. Passive adjectival participle (imiesłów przymiotnikowy bierny) - “-ny / -ony / -ty”
Formed from transitive verbs (both aspects). It means “the one that is/was done to”, and it is the building block of the passive voice (Lesson 48). Three endings, chosen by the verb’s stem:
- -ny / -any: infinitives in -ać/-eć - czytać -> czytany, napisać -> napisany, widzieć -> widziany.
- -ony: infinitives in -ić/-yć and the -c verbs, often with a consonant alternation - robić -> robiony, kupić -> kupiony, prosić -> proszony (s -> sz), upiec -> upieczony (c -> cz).
- -ty: short -yć/-uć/-ić stems and the -nąć / -ąć verbs - myć -> myty, pić -> pity, zamknąć -> zamknięty, wziąć -> wzięty.
It also declines like an adjective: zrobiony, zrobiona, zrobione.
3. Contemporary adverbial participle (imiesłów przysłówkowy współczesny) - “-ąc”
Formed only from imperfective verbs: 3rd person plural present minus -ą plus -ąc: czytają -> czytając, robią -> robiąc, będąc (from być). It is indeclinable and expresses an action happening at the same time as the main verb (“while / by doing”): Czytając gazetę, pił kawę. Crucial rule: its subject must be the same as the main clause’s subject.
4. Anterior adverbial participle (imiesłów przysłówkowy uprzedni) - “-wszy / -łszy”
Formed only from perfective verbs, from the masculine past stem. If the stem ends in a vowel, add -wszy; if in a consonant, add -łszy: przeczytał -> przeczytawszy, zrobił -> zrobiwszy, zjadł -> zjadłszy, poszedł -> poszedłszy. Also indeclinable; it marks an action completed before the main verb (“having done”): Przeczytawszy list, wyszedł. Same-subject rule again. This form is bookish and mostly written.
5. Verbal noun (rzeczownik odczasownikowy) - “-nie / -cie”
A neuter noun built on the passive-participle stem: czytany -> czytanie, robiony -> robienie, myty -> mycie, pity -> picie. It names the action itself (“reading, doing”) and declines like a regular -e neuter noun. Many are everyday vocabulary: jedzenie (food/eating), spanie (sleeping), pływanie (swimming), palenie (smoking).

Common mistakes
- zrobiąc, built from the perfective zrobić -> robiąc - the -ąc form comes only from imperfective verbs; a perfective gives zrobiwszy.
- przeczytając for “having read” -> przeczytawszy - completed prior action needs the anterior -wszy form.
- Czytając książkę, zadzwonił telefon. -> Czytając książkę, usłyszałem telefon. - the adverbial participle must share the subject of the main clause (the phone was not reading).
- czytany student for “the reading student” -> czytający student - do not confuse the active -ący (“who is reading”) with the passive -ny (czytany, “being read”).
- robiany -> robiony - -ić verbs take -ony, not -any.
- otworzony -> otwarty - otworzyć is irregular: it takes -ty on a changed stem, not the -ony of other -yć verbs.
- czytania to moja pasja -> czytanie to moja pasja - the verbal noun subject is nominative -nie, not genitive -nia.
Tips
- Two questions sort out every adverbial participle: same time or before? and which aspect? Same time + imperfective -> -ąc; before + perfective -> -wszy.
- Build the active -ący and the contemporary -ąc from the same base: the oni/one present form (czytają). One gives czytający, the other czytając.
- The passive participle and the verbal noun share a stem: if you know zrobiony, the noun is zrobienie; if myty, then mycie. Learn them as a pair.
- Adverbial participles are subject-locked - only use one when the doer of both actions is identical. If subjects differ, switch to a full clause with kiedy / gdy / podczas gdy.
- The -wszy form sounds formal and literary; in speech Poles usually prefer kiedy + past tense. Recognise it, but do not overuse it.
- Verbal nouns in -nie/-cie are everywhere as ordinary vocabulary (spotkanie - meeting, zebranie - gathering, życie - life), so treating them as nouns first makes them easy.
