Verbal prefixation
B2 Prefiksacja czasownika 45 / 52
In short
Polish builds a huge share of its verbs by gluing a prefix onto a base verb. A prefix does one of two jobs: it can simply make an imperfective verb perfective (its “empty”, grammatical use, seen in lesson 20), or it can add a real shade of meaning - a direction, a phase, a degree - and create a whole new verb. When a prefix changes the meaning, Polish then rebuilds the imperfective partner with a suffix. Learning to read prefixes turns one root like pisać into a dozen predictable verbs.
The rule
A prefix (przedrostek) attaches to the front of a verb. Two different things can happen.
1. The prefix is “empty” - it only perfectivises
For many common verbs, one particular prefix adds no new meaning; it just supplies the perfective partner of an existing imperfective (lesson 20). The pair then means the same thing, differing only in aspect:
- pisać -> napisać (“write”)
- robić -> zrobić (“do, make”)
- czytać -> przeczytać (“read”)
- jeść -> zjeść (“eat”)
Here the base pisać is already imperfective, so no new imperfective is needed. Which prefix is the “empty” one is unpredictable and must be learned per verb.
2. The prefix is lexical - it changes the meaning
Any other prefix added to the same root makes a new verb with its own meaning. From pisać (“write”) alone you get podpisać (“sign”), przepisać (“copy out”), zapisać (“note down / enrol”), wypisać (“write out / discharge”), opisać (“describe”), and more. Each is perfective.
Rebuilding the imperfective: secondary imperfectivisation
Because a lexical prefix produces a perfective verb, Polish needs a matching imperfective. It builds one with a suffix (most often -ywać / -iwać, sometimes -ać with a stem-vowel change). This is called secondary imperfectivisation:
- podpisać (pf.) -> podpisywać (impf.) “to sign”
- zapisać (pf.) -> zapisywać (impf.)
- przerobić (pf.) -> przerabiać (impf.) - note the o -> a stem change
- zarobić (pf.) -> zarabiać (impf.) “to earn”
So the full life of a root is: base impf. -> prefix = new pf. -> suffix = new impf.
Aktionsart: prefixes that add a phase or degree
Beyond direction, some prefixes mark how much or which phase of the action - its Aktionsart (manner). These are very productive:
- po- = a bit / for a while (delimitative): poczytać “read a while”, pospać “sleep a bit”
- za- = begin (ingressive): zaboleć “start to hurt”, zapłakać “begin to cry”
- roz- … się = burst into / warm up: rozpłakać się “burst into tears”, rozgadać się “get talking”
- na- … się = to satiety (do one’s fill): najeść się “eat one’s fill”, naspać się “sleep one’s fill”
- do- = finish the rest (completive): dojeść “finish eating”, doczytać “read to the end”
- prze- = do throughout / overdo / redo: przespać noc “sleep through the night”, przesolić “over-salt”
Forms & patterns
The common prefixes and what they add
| Prefix | Typical meaning | Example (pf.) | Gloss |
|---|---|---|---|
| na- | onto / (empty) / to satiety | napisać | write |
| za- | behind / begin / note-in | zapisać | note down, enrol |
| prze- | across / through / re- / overdo | przepisać | copy out, rewrite |
| pod- | under / up to / sub- | podpisać | sign |
| od- | away / back / reply | odpisać | write back |
| do- | up to / finish the rest | dopisać | add in writing |
| wy- | out / fully | wypisać | write out, discharge |
| w- | in(to) | wpisać | enter, type in |
| o-/ob- | around / about | opisać | describe |
| roz- | apart / spread out | rozpisać | spell out, announce |
| s-/z- | together / down / (empty) | spisać | list, take down |
| po- | a little / for a while | popisać się | show off |
One root, many verbs: pisać (“to write”)
| Perfective | Secondary imperfective | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| napisać | pisać (base) | write (empty pair) |
| podpisać | podpisywać | sign |
| przepisać | przepisywać | copy out; prescribe |
| zapisać | zapisywać | note down; enrol; save (a file) |
| wypisać | wypisywać | write out; discharge |
| wpisać | wpisywać | enter, type in |
| dopisać | dopisywać | add in writing |
| odpisać | odpisywać | write back; deduct |
| opisać | opisywać | describe |
| spisać | spisywać | list, take down |
Conjugating a prefixed pair: podpisać (pf.) / podpisywać (impf.)
The perfective conjugates like its base pisać (endings = simple future, lesson 23); the secondary imperfective takes the -uję pattern in the present.
| podpisać (pf. = future) | podpisywać (impf. = present) | |
|---|---|---|
| ja | podpiszę | podpisuję |
| ty | podpiszesz | podpisujesz |
| on/ona/ono | podpisze | podpisuje |
| my | podpiszemy | podpisujemy |
| wy | podpiszecie | podpisujecie |
| oni/one | podpiszą | podpisują |
| past (masc. sg.) | podpisałem | podpisywałem |
| past (fem. sg.) | podpisałam | podpisywałam |
The same system on robić (“to do, make”)
| Perfective | Secondary imperfective | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| zrobić | robić (base) | do, make (empty pair) |
| przerobić | przerabiać | redo, remake, convert |
| zarobić | zarabiać | earn |
| wyrobić | wyrabiać | produce; knead |
| odrobić | odrabiać | do (homework); make up for |
| dorobić | dorabiać | make extra; earn on the side |
| narobić | (narabiać, rare) | make a lot of; cause |
Notice the stem change: the suffixed imperfectives of -robić all show o -> a (przerabiać, zarabiać, odrabiać).
Spelling at the prefix boundary
When a prefix ending in a consonant meets an awkward cluster, a -e- is inserted, and the voicing of z-/s- follows the next sound (lesson 44).
| Prefix | Before a vowel/simple onset | Before a cluster (insert -e-) |
|---|---|---|
| w- / we- | wpisać | wejść (w + iść) |
| od- / ode- | odpisać | odejść, odetkać |
| roz- / roze- | rozpisać | rozejść się |
| z- / ze- / s- | zrobić (voiced), spisać (voiceless) | zebrać |
Examples

Common mistakes
- Będę podpisać umowę. -> Podpiszę umowę. - a prefixed perfective makes its own one-word future; never with będę.
- Codziennie przepiszę notatki. -> Codziennie przepisuję notatki. - a habit needs the secondary imperfective przepisywać, not the perfective.
- przerobywać -> przerabiać - the imperfective of przerobić uses -abiać (o -> a), not -obywać.
- zapisywam -> zapisuję - the -ywać verbs conjugate -uję, -ujesz in the present, not -ywam.
- napisać used for “to sign” -> podpisać - the empty na- only means “write”; “sign” is the lexical pod-.
- odrobiłem lekcje said as habit -> for “I do my homework every day” use odrabiam lekcje - the perfective marks one completed set.
- wypisować (built back from wypisuję) -> wypisywać - the present in -uję hides the suffix: the infinitive is -ywać, not -ować.
Tips
- Learn each derived verb as a pair: perfective + its -ywać / -abiać imperfective (podpisać / podpisywać). The prefix fixes the meaning, the suffix gives you the “process” partner.
- When you meet a new prefixed verb, split it: prefix + known root. Wy- + pisać = “write out”, do- + pisać = “write in addition”. The meaning is often guessable.
- Two rules of thumb for the imperfective suffix: default to -ywać / -iwać (present -uję); with roots in -obić / -orzyć expect the o -> a change (przerobić -> przerabiać).
- Remember the phase prefixes as a mini-set: po- (a bit), za- (start), do- (finish off), na- … się (to the full), roz- … się (burst into). They stack neatly onto everyday verbs.
- If a “present-looking” prefixed verb (podpiszę, przerobię) sits where you expect “now”, it is really the future - the perfective has no present (lesson 20).
