Adverbs
A2 Przysłówek 27 / 52
In short
An adverb (Polish przysłówek) describes how, where, when or how much something happens: mówię wolno (I speak slowly), tutaj (here), dzisiaj (today), bardzo (very). Unlike adjectives, adverbs never change form - they have no gender, number or case, so once you know the word you always use it as it is. Many manner adverbs are built straight from adjectives you already know, so a small rule turns half your adjective vocabulary into adverbs.
The rule
An adverb answers jak? (how?), gdzie? (where?), kiedy? (when?) or jak bardzo? (how much?). It typically modifies a verb (pracuje szybko - he works fast), an adjective (bardzo dobry - very good), or another adverb (bardzo szybko - very fast). Because an adverb is indeclinable, it looks the same no matter what surrounds it.
Making adverbs from adjectives
Most manner adverbs come from a quality adjective (Lesson 11). Drop the adjective’s masculine ending -y / -i and add one of two adverb endings:
- -o - the most common: szybki -> szybko (fast), wolny -> wolno (slowly), ciepły -> ciepło (warm), daleki -> daleko (far).
- -e - often with a soft or hardened consonant before it: dobry -> dobrze (well), ładny -> ładnie (nicely), ciekawy -> ciekawie (interestingly).
Which ending a given adjective takes is largely fixed by the word and must be learned, but -o is the safe default and by far the more frequent.
Consonant changes before -e
The -e ending softens or hardens the final stem consonant, exactly like the alternations you saw in the locative of nouns (Lesson 16; the full system comes in Lesson 44):
- r -> rz: dobry -> dobrze, mądry -> mądrze, szczery -> szczerze.
- n -> ń (spelled ni): ładny -> ładnie, piękny -> pięknie, smaczny -> smacznie.
- w -> wi: ciekawy -> ciekawie, prawdziwy -> prawdziwie.
Non-derived adverbs
Many everyday adverbs are not built from adjectives and simply have to be memorised. They fall into groups by meaning: place (tu, tam, tutaj, wszędzie, nigdzie), time (teraz, dziś, jutro, wczoraj, zawsze, często, nigdy, już, jeszcze), and degree/quantity (bardzo, trochę, dużo, mało, zupełnie, prawie).
Adverbs as the predicate (impersonal sentences)
The -o adverb also works as the whole predicate in a subjectless sentence describing a state or feeling. There is no to jest and no gender - just the adverb (optionally with a dative “experiencer”):
- Jest zimno. - It is cold.
- Zimno mi. - I am cold. (lit. “cold to-me”)
- Miło mi. - Nice to meet you / I am pleased.
- Trudno powiedzieć. - It is hard to say.
You will meet this pattern in full in Lesson 49 (impersonal constructions).

Common mistakes
- Ona mówi dobra. -> Ona mówi dobrze. - a verb needs an adverb (dobrze), not the adjective dobra.
- On jest dobrze student. -> On jest dobrym studentem. - describing a noun needs an adjective in a case, not the adverb dobrze.
- Jest zimna. (meaning “it is cold out”) -> Jest zimno. - an impersonal state uses the neuter adverb -o, not a feminine adjective.
- dobrze -> dobrzy for “well” -> keep dobrze; dobrzy is the masculine-personal plural adjective, a different word.
- ładny mówi -> mówi ładnie - form the adverb (ładnie) before using it with a verb.
- bardzo dużo dobrze -> bardzo dobrze - use bardzo (very), not dużo (a lot), to intensify another adverb.
Tips
- Ask jak? (how?): if the answer describes an action, you need an adverb (mówi jak? - dobrze); if it describes a thing, you need an adjective (jaki? - dobry).
- Default to -o when you are unsure: szybko, wolno, ciepło, tanio - it is the more common ending and rarely wrong for everyday quality words.
- Remember the star pair together: dobrze / źle (well / badly) - they come up constantly.
- Adverbs never inflect, so there is nothing to agree with - one form fits every sentence.
- The -o adverb doubles as a one-word weather/feeling sentence: Ciepło. Zimno. Miło. Smutno. Add a dative for the person: Zimno mi.
- Do not confuse dużo/mało (quantity: a lot / little) with a degree word like bardzo (very) - bardzo modifies qualities, dużo counts amounts.
