Comparison of adjectives and adverbs

In short

Polish grades adjectives and adverbs in three degrees: positive (nowy - new), comparative (nowszy - newer) and superlative (najnowszy - newest). Most short, everyday words build the comparative with a suffix (-szy for adjectives, -ej for adverbs) and the superlative with the prefix naj-. Longer words instead take bardziej / najbardziej (more / most), and a handful are irregular. This is one of the most useful A2 tools - it lets you say faster, cheaper, better, the best.

The rule

Polish has two ways to build the comparative and superlative, plus a small irregular set. You pick the route by the word, not by taste - short common words use the suffix, long ones use the extra word.

Route 1: the synthetic suffix (short, common words)

For most one- or two-syllable adjectives, add -szy to the stem for the comparative, then prefix naj- for the superlative:

  • nowy -> nowszy -> najnowszy (new / newer / newest)
  • stary -> starszy -> najstarszy (old / older / oldest)

The comparative form is itself a full adjective: it declines for gender, number and case exactly like a hard adjective (nowszy, nowsza, nowsze…). The superlative is simply naj- glued to the front of the comparative - nothing else changes.

Adverbs follow the same logic but with -ej instead of -szy:

  • szybko -> szybciej -> najszybciej (quickly / faster / fastest)

Route 2: bardziej / najbardziej (long or derived words)

Longer adjectives, and especially participle-like ones (interesujący, zmęczony, znany), do not take -szy. Instead you put bardziej (more) or najbardziej (most) in front:

  • interesujący -> bardziej interesujący -> najbardziej interesujący (interesting / more / most)

For the opposite direction (less / least), use mniej / najmniej with any word: mniej ciekawy (less interesting), najmniej znany (least known). Never combine the two routes: bardziej nowszy is wrong.

Irregular (suppletive) forms

A few high-frequency words change their root entirely - learn these by heart:

  • dobry -> lepszy -> najlepszy (good / better / best)
  • zły -> gorszy -> najgorszy (bad / worse / worst)
  • duży -> większy -> największy (big / bigger / biggest)
  • mały -> mniejszy -> najmniejszy (small / smaller / smallest)

Their adverbs are just as irregular: dobrze -> lepiej, źle -> gorzej, dużo -> więcej, mało -> mniej.

Saying “than”, “as … as” and more

  • than has two options: niż keeps the second noun in the nominative (wyższy niż Marek), while od takes the genitive (wyższy od Marka). Both mean taller than Marek.
  • as … as (equality) = tak … jak: tak wysoki jak ja (as tall as I am).
  • the more … the more = im … tym + comparatives: im więcej, tym lepiej (the more, the better).
  • more and more = coraz + comparative: coraz lepiej (better and better).
  • much …er = o wiele or znacznie + comparative: o wiele lepszy (much better).

Comparison of adverbs (szybko / szybciej / najszybciej)

Adverbs from adjectives grade with -ej (comparative) and naj- (superlative). Watch the same consonant and vowel changes as the adjectives:

Common mistakes

  • bardziej dobry -> lepszy - dobry is irregular; never grade it with bardziej.
  • bardziej szybki -> szybszy - short adjectives take the suffix -szy, not bardziej.
  • bardziej lepszy -> lepszy - do not stack the two routes; one comparative marker is enough.
  • bardziej szybko -> szybciej - adverbs also have a synthetic -ej form.
  • wyższy jak Marek -> wyższy niż Marek / wyższy od Marka - “than” is niż (+ nominative) or od (+ genitive), never jak.
  • starszy od Marek -> starszy od Marka - od governs the genitive, so the noun must change ending.
  • naj dobry -> najlepszy - the superlative attaches naj- to the comparative stem, written as one word.

Tips

  • One decision first: short/common word -> suffix (-szy for adjectives, -ej for adverbs); long or participle-like word -> bardziej / najbardziej. Never both.
  • The superlative is free once you know the comparative: just prefix naj- (nowszy -> najnowszy, szybciej -> najszybciej).
  • Drill the four suppletive families cold: dobry/dobrze, zły/źle, duży/dużo, mały/mało - they cover half of everyday comparisons.
  • “Than” has two shapes: niż leaves the noun in the nominative; od + genitive is shorter and extremely common (od Marka, od ciebie).
  • The endings trigger consonant swaps - g -> ż (drogi -> droższy), k -> ci (szybko -> szybciej), st -> ść (często -> częściej). Expect them rather than fighting them.
  • Handy combos: coraz + comparative (coraz lepiej - better and better), im … tym + comparatives (im wcześniej, tym lepiej), o wiele + comparative (o wiele tańszy - much cheaper).
