Position & placement verbs

A2 Positie- & plaatsingswerkwoorden 33 / 48

In short

Where English just says be and put, Dutch picks a specific verb based on the object’s posture: staan (upright), liggen (lying flat), zitten (enclosed/inside) or hangen (hanging). Each “be”-verb has a matching “put”-verb: zetten, leggen, stoppen/doen, hangen.

The rule

Dutch almost never uses zijn (“to be”) to say where an object is located. Instead it asks: how does the thing sit there?

  • staan - it stands upright on a base (bottle, glass, lamp, building, car, a person standing).
  • liggen - it lies flat / horizontally (book on a table, person in bed, a town in a region).
  • zitten - it is enclosed, inside or stuck to something (money in a wallet, a button on a shirt, a person sitting on a chair).
  • hangen - it hangs (coat on a hook, painting on a wall, clothes on the line).

These four are intransitive (no direct object) and answer the question waar? (where?).

For putting something somewhere, Dutch uses the matching placement (causative) verbs. These are transitive (they take a direct object) and answer waar…heen? / where to:

  • zetten = put something so it stands -> pairs with staan
  • leggen = lay something flat -> pairs with liggen
  • stoppen / doen = put something inside -> pairs with zitten (stoppen = stick/tuck in; doen = general, informal)
  • hangen = hang something up -> same word as the position verb

Forms & patterns

Conjugation (position verbs are strong; placement verbs are weak unless noted)

Aspect use (link to lesson 32). The position verbs + te + infinitive express an ongoing action, like English be …-ing:

Hij zit te lezenHe is (sitting) reading
Ze staat te wachtenShe is (standing) waiting
Ik lig te slapenI am (lying) sleeping

Common mistakes

  • Het boek staat op tafel -> Het boek ligt op tafel - a flat book lies; only upright things staan.
  • Het glas is op tafel -> Het glas staat op tafel - don’t use zijn for location; pick a posture verb.
  • Ik lig het boek op tafel -> Ik leg het boek op tafel - liggen = lie (no object); leggen = lay (takes an object).
  • Ik leg in bed -> Ik lig in bed - mirror error: with no object you need the intransitive liggen.
  • Ik zit de fles op tafel -> Ik zet de fles op tafel - zitten = be sitting; the “put upright” verb is zetten.

Tips

  • Memory hook: staan = stands tall (vertical), liggen = lies low (horizontal), zitten = sits inside (contained), hangen = hangs.
  • The placement verbs always have a direct object and a destination: Ik leg [het boek] op tafel. The position verbs have neither.
  • Quick test for leggen/liggen and zetten/zitten: can you replace the verb with “put X”? Then use the transitive one (leggen/zetten). Otherwise use liggen/zitten.
  • People sit on chairs (zitten), stand in queues (staan) and lie in bed (liggen) - the same logic applies to humans.
