Indefinite adjectives and pronouns

B1 Les indéfinis (tout, chaque, quelques, plusieurs, aucun) 45 / 52

In short

Indefinites talk about quantity or identity without being specific: all, each, some, several, certain, none. The key split is grammatical: an indefinite adjective sits before a noun (plusieurs livres), while an indefinite pronoun replaces the noun and stands alone (plusieurs sont partis).

The rule

Most of these words come in two flavours - an adjective form that accompanies a noun, and a pronoun form that replaces it. Watch the small spelling changes between them (quelques -> quelques-uns, chaque -> chacun, certains stays, tout changes shape). Agreement and number are the usual traps.

Adjectives (before a noun)

  • tout / toute / tous / toutes = all, the whole, every. It agrees with the noun and is normally followed by an article or determiner: tout le pain (all the bread), toute la journée (the whole day), tous les jours (every day), toutes mes amies (all my friends).
  • chaque = each, every. Invariable and always singular: chaque jour, chaque étudiant. There is no plural form.
  • quelques = a few, some. Plural only, invariable: quelques amis, quelques minutes.
  • plusieurs = several. Plural only, invariable, no separate feminine: plusieurs personnes, plusieurs livres.
  • certains / certaines = certain, some. Plural, agrees in gender, and takes no article: certains jours, certaines idées. In the singular, before a noun, un certain / une certaine keeps the indefinite article and means “a certain, a degree of” rather than “some”: un certain nombre, une certaine prudence.
  • aucun / aucune = no, not any. Singular, agrees in gender, and needs ne before the verb: aucun problème, je n’ai aucune idée.

Pronouns (replacing a noun)

  • tout = everything: Tout va bien. / tous (final -s pronounced!) and toutes = all of them: Ils sont tous là.
  • chacun / chacune = each one: Chacun a son rôle. / Chacune de mes sœurs.
  • quelques-uns / quelques-unes = a few, some of them: Quelques-uns sont arrivés.
  • plusieurs = several (of them): Plusieurs ont refusé.
  • certains / certaines = some people, certain ones: Certains pensent que…
  • aucun / aucune = none, not one - still needs ne: Aucun n’est venu.

n’importe qui / quoi / où / quand / comment

n’importe + a question word means no matter which / any… at all. It expresses free, indifferent choice:

  • n’importe qui = anybody (at all): N’importe qui peut le faire.
  • n’importe quoi = anything / (colloquially) nonsense: Il dit n’importe quoi.
  • n’importe où = anywhere: Assieds-toi n’importe où.
  • n’importe quand = anytime: Appelle-moi n’importe quand.
  • n’importe comment = any old way, carelessly: Il travaille n’importe comment.
  • n’importe quel / quelle / quels / quelles + noun = any (whichever): Prends n’importe quel stylo.

Common mistakes

  • chaques jours -> chaque jour - chaque is invariable and always singular.
  • plusieurs personne -> plusieurs personnes - plusieurs forces a plural noun.
  • J’ai aucun idée -> Je n’ai aucune idée - aucun agrees in gender (idée is fem.) and needs ne.
  • quelques-un est venu -> quelques-uns sont venus - the pronoun takes a hyphen, -s, and a plural verb.
  • chaque de mes amis -> chacun de mes amis - before de use the pronoun chacun, not the adjective chaque.
  • Prends n’importe quel de ces stylos -> Prends n’importe lequel de ces stylos - before de, use n'importe lequel, not quel.

Tips

  • Adjective touches a noun; pronoun stands alone. That single test sorts quelques from quelques-uns, chaque from chacun.
  • tout as an adjective usually needs an article after it: tout le monde, toute la ville, tous les jours.
  • As a pronoun, the -s of tous is pronounced (“tooss”): Ils sont tous venus. As an adjective it is silent: tous les jours.
  • aucun and nul are singular by nature - pair them with ne and a singular noun/verb: Aucun train ne circule.
  • Use chaque for the adjective and chacun for the pronoun - never chaque + de.
  • n'importe quoi also means “rubbish/nonsense” in speech: Tu racontes n’importe quoi.
