Futur I (future)
A2 Futur I 32 / 52
In short
Futur I = werden (conjugated, in position 2) + the main verb’s infinitive at the very end: Ich werde morgen arbeiten. It expresses predictions, intentions/promises, and assumptions about the present - but watch out: spoken German usually just uses the present tense + a time word (Morgen arbeite ich), so Futur I is far rarer than English “will”.
The rule
Futur I has two parts that form the usual German sentence bracket (Satzklammer):
- werden is the conjugated verb and sits in position 2 of a main clause.
- the infinitive of the main verb goes to the very end of the clause.
Ich werde nächste Woche umziehen. (I’ll move next week.) Es wird bald regnen. (It will rain soon.)
werden is irregular - learn it by heart:
| Person | werden |
|---|---|
| ich | werde |
| du | wirst |
| er / sie / es | wird |
| wir | werden |
| ihr | werdet |
| sie / Sie | werden |
Three uses:
- Predictions / expectations - what you think will happen: Es wird kalt werden. (It will get cold.) Du wirst das schaffen. (You’ll manage it.)
- Intentions / promises - a firm plan or a pledge, often with stress: Ich werde dir helfen. (I will help you.) Ich werde nie wieder zu spät kommen. (I’ll never be late again.)
- Assumptions about the PRESENT - a guess about now, usually with wohl, sicher, schon: Er wird wohl zu Hause sein. (He’s probably home.) Sie wird das schon wissen. (She surely knows that.)
The everyday reality: German speakers normally use the present tense plus a time expression for future events. Morgen arbeite ich. / Nächstes Jahr fahren wir nach Italien. Both are completely correct and far more common than the Futur-I versions. Use Futur I when you want to be emphatic, make a promise, voice a prediction, or guess about the present.
Note: don’t mix up this werden (future auxiliary) with werden = “to become” (lesson 3, Es wird kalt) or the werden-passive (lesson 38, Das Auto wird repariert).
Forms & patterns
The sentence bracket - werden in position 2, infinitive at the end:
| Position 1 | 2 (werden) | middle field | end (infinitive) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ich | werde | morgen | arbeiten. |
| Wir | werden | uns bald | wiedersehen. |
| Nächstes Jahr | wird | er nach Berlin | ziehen. |
| Es | wird | heute Abend | regnen. |
With a modal verb, two infinitives go to the end (modal last): Ich werde das machen müssen. (I’ll have to do that.)
Questions and subordinate clauses:
| Type | Example | Note |
|---|---|---|
| yes/no question | Wirst du mir helfen? | werden first, infinitive last |
| W-question | Wann wirst du kommen? | werden in position 2 |
| weil-clause | …, weil es regnen wird. | werden goes to the end, after the infinitive |
Examples
| Deutsch | English |
|---|---|
| Ich werde dir morgen helfen. | I will help you tomorrow. |
| Es wird heute Nachmittag regnen. | It will rain this afternoon. |
| Wir werden uns bald wiedersehen. | We will see each other again soon. |
| Du wirst die Prüfung sicher bestehen. | You will surely pass the exam. |
| Er wird wohl noch im Büro sein. | He’s probably still at the office. |
| Ich werde nie wieder zu spät kommen. | I will never be late again. |
| In zehn Jahren werden alle Autos elektrisch fahren. | In ten years all cars will run on electricity. |
| Das Wetter wird am Wochenende besser werden. | The weather will get better at the weekend. |
Common mistakes
- Ich werde morgen arbeite. -> Ich werde morgen arbeiten. - the second verb must be an infinitive, not conjugated.
- Ich werde arbeiten morgen. -> Ich werde morgen arbeiten. - the infinitive belongs at the end, not right after werden.
- Ich will morgen kommen (meaning “I will come”) -> Ich werde morgen kommen. - will is the modal wollen (= want to), a false friend; the future auxiliary is werden.
- Er wird ein Arzt (for “he will be a doctor”) -> Er wird Arzt sein or simply Er wird Arzt. - bare werden + noun means “become”; for the future of “to be” add the infinitive sein.
- Over-using Futur I: Ich werde dich später anrufen for a normal plan -> more natural: Ich rufe dich später an. - everyday German prefers present + time word.
Tips
- Memory hook: werden = position 2, infinitive = position last. Same bracket you already know from modal verbs (Ich kann … arbeiten).
- If a time word makes the future clear (morgen, später, nächste Woche), you can usually just use the present tense - simpler and more common.
- For a guess about right now, reach for Futur I + wohl/sicher/schon: Sie wird wohl schlafen = “She’s probably sleeping.”
- Don’t translate English “will” with German will - that is wollen (to want). The future is always werden.
