Indefinite pronouns (man, etwas, jemand)

A2 Indefinitpronomen (man, etwas, jemand) 31 / 52

In short

Indefinite pronouns point to unspecified people or things. The star of this lesson is man (“one / you / they / people”), which is hugely common, always uses the er/sie/es verb form, and has the object forms einen (acc.) and einem (dat.). Around it sit pairs like jemand/niemand, etwas/nichts, plus alles, alle, jeder and quantity words.

The rule

man is an impersonal subject. Use it when the doer is general or unknown - it covers English “one, you, they, people, somebody”. It is always 3rd person singular (same verb form as er/sie/es), even though the meaning is plural.

  • Man spricht hier Deutsch. - German is spoken here. (people speak)
  • Hier darf man nicht rauchen. - You may not smoke here.

When man is not the subject but the object, it changes form: einen in the accusative, einem in the dative; the possessive is sein.

  • Solche Nachrichten machen einen traurig. - Such news makes you sad. (acc.)
  • Das hilft einem sehr. - That helps you a lot. (dat.)

jemand (someone) / niemand (no one) refer to persons; the case endings -en (acc.) and -em (dat.) are optional and often dropped in speech.

etwas (something) / nichts (nothing) refer to things and never change form. After them an adjective becomes a capitalised neuter noun with a strong ending: etwas Schönes, nichts Neues (dative: mit etwas Schönem).

alles = everything; alle = everyone / all (plural); jeder = each / everyone and declines like dieser (singular only). The quantity words einige, manche, wenige, viele decline like plural adjectives, while etwas, ein bisschen (a little), ein paar (a few) stay unchanged.

welch- can mean “some” when you reply about a known noun and want to avoid repeating it; it agrees in gender and number: Hast du Brot? - Ja, ich habe welches.

Common mistakes

  • Man sind freundlich. -> Man ist freundlich. - man is always 3rd person singular (er/sie/es form), never plural.
  • Das macht man traurig. (as object) -> Das macht einen traurig. - as an object man becomes einen (acc.) / einem (dat.).
  • etwas schönes / nichts neues -> etwas Schönes / nichts Neues - the adjective after etwas/nichts is a noun: capitalise it and add -es.
  • jeder Kinder bekommt etwas. -> Jedes Kind (singular) or alle Kinder (plural) - jeder has no plural; use alle instead.
  • Niemand ist nicht gekommen. -> Niemand ist gekommen. - niemand/nichts are already negative; don’t add a second negation.
  • Alle ist gut. -> Alles ist gut. - alles = everything (things); alle = everyone (people, plural).

Tips

  • Don’t confuse man (the pronoun “one/you”) with der Mann (the man): man is always lowercase mid-sentence and takes no article.
  • Translate man into English as “you / one / they / people” - whichever sounds most natural: Hier darf man parken. = “You can park here.”
  • After etwas, nichts, viel, wenig, an adjective is nominalised and neuter: viel Interessantes, wenig Gutes - capital letter + -es.
  • Memory hook: jeder rhymes with dieser and declines the same way; both are singular.
