Two-way prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen)

A2 Wechselpräpositionen 23 / 52

In short

Nine prepositions take either the accusative or the dative. Movement toward a goal (Wohin? - where to?) takes the accusative; a fixed location (Wo? - where?) takes the dative.

The rule

There are nine two-way prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen):

PrepositionMeaning
anat, on (vertical)
aufon (horizontal)
hinterbehind
inin, into
nebennext to
überover, above
unterunder, among
vorin front of, before
zwischenbetween

The case is not fixed by the preposition - it is chosen by the meaning:

  • Wohin? (direction / a change of place) -> ACCUSATIVE Ich gehe in die Schule. (I go into the school.) Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand. (I hang the picture onto the wall.) Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch. (I put the book onto the table.)

  • Wo? (location / no change of place) -> DATIVE Ich bin in der Schule. (I am in the school.) Das Bild hängt an der Wand. (The picture hangs on the wall.) Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. (The book lies on the table.)

  • Wann? (a time) -> DATIVE. A time is neither a goal nor a place, so the Wohin?/Wo? test cannot decide it: vor dem Frühstück, zwischen zwei Terminen, in einer Stunde, am Montag. Exception: a stretch of time with über takes the accusative - über das Wochenende.

The verb is your best clue. “Put” verbs describe a movement and trigger the accusative; “be-positioned” verbs describe a state and trigger the dative.

Action verb (Wohin? + Akk.)Position verb (Wo? + Dat.)
stellen (stand sth. up)stehen (be standing)
legen (lay sth. down)liegen (be lying)
hängen (hang sth. up)hängen (be hanging)
setzen (set/seat sth.)sitzen (be sitting)
stecken (stick sth. in)stecken (be stuck/sitting in)

A verb of motion is not automatically Wohin?: if the movement stays inside one area, nothing changes place, so the dative follows - Wir laufen im Park (Wo? - running about in it) but Wir laufen in den Park (Wohin? - heading there).

Forms & patterns

Article forms after a two-way preposition:

masc.fem.neut.plural
Wohin? (Akk.)den / einendie / einedas / eindie / -
Wo? (Dat.)dem / einemder / einerdem / einemden / - (+ -n)

Note: in the dative plural the noun also adds -n (auf den Tischen, unless the plural already ends in -n/-s).

Common contractions (very frequent in everyday German):

an dasansAkk. (Wohin?)
an demamDat. (Wo?)
in dasinsAkk. (Wohin?)
in demimDat. (Wo?)
auf dasaufsAkk. (Wohin?)

Examples

DeutschEnglish
Ich stelle die Lampe in die Ecke.I put the lamp into the corner. (Wohin? - Akk.)
Die Lampe steht in der Ecke. The lamp stands in the corner. (Wo? - Dat.)
Häng die Jacke bitte an den Haken. Please hang the jacket on the hook. (Wohin? - Akk.)
Der Schlüssel hängt am Haken. The key is hanging on the hook. (Wo? - Dat.)
Die Katze springt aufs Sofa. The cat jumps onto the sofa. (Wohin? - Akk.)
Die Kinder sitzen auf dem Sofa. The children are sitting on the sofa. (Wo? - Dat.)
Der Hund schwimmt im See.The dog is swimming in the lake. (Wo? - Dat.: motion inside one area)
Mein Auto steht zwischen zwei Lastwagen. My car is parked between two trucks. (Wo? - Dat.)

Common mistakes

  • Ich gehe in der Schule. -> Ich gehe in die Schule. - the school is the goal (Wohin?), so accusative; the dative would only say where you already are.
  • Das Buch liegt auf den Tisch. -> Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. - “liegen” is position (Wo?), so dative.
  • Ich hänge das Bild an der Wand. -> Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand. - hanging it up is a movement; the result-state would be “an der Wand”.
  • Ich bin ins Büro. -> Ich bin im Büro. - “sein” states a location (Wo?), so dative/contraction “im”.
  • zwischen zwei Lastwagens -> zwischen zwei Lastwagen - dative plural needs -n, but “Lastwagen” is already invariable in the plural.

Tips

  • Ask one question before choosing the case: Wohin? (a goal, a change of place) -> Akkusativ; Wo? (a place, no change) -> Dativ.
  • Learn the verbs in pairs: action verb + Akk. vs. position verb + Dat. - legen/liegen, stellen/stehen, setzen/sitzen, hängen/hängen.
  • Memory hook: Akkusativ = Action/Arrow (you move toward a target); Dativ = Da (it’s already “there”).
  • The contractions am, im, ans, ins, aufs are normal speech - use them, but remember am/im signal “Wo?” and ans/ins/aufs signal “Wohin?”.
