O conjuntivo e os resquícios formais

C1 Subjunctive & formal remnants 50 / 50

Em resumo

O inglês moderno já não tem quase nenhum conjuntivo, mas restam duas partes úteis: o conjuntivo de mandato — a forma base pura do verbo depois de palavras de exigência ou importância (I insist that he be on time) — e o were-conjuntivo em frases irreais (If I were you). Além destes, um punhado de expressões fixas (so be it, come what may) são apenas fórmulas decoradas.

Regra

  • I suggest that he be on time. (não is)
  • It is essential that she arrive early. (não arrives)
  • They demanded that he leave.

  • They insisted that the door remain open.

As negativas colocam simplesmente not antes da forma base — sem nenhum do/does/did:

  • We ask that visitors not touch the exhibits. (não do not touch)

A passiva usa be + particípio passado: It is vital that the form be signed today.

  • I suggest that he should be on time. (brit.) = …that he be on time. (formal / amer.)

Atenção: suggest e recommend têm dois significados. A ideia de mandato («devias fazer isto») leva a forma base: I recommend that she see a doctor. Uma simples afirmação de facto («é isto que acontece») não leva: The data suggests that she is improving.

2. O conjuntivo com were usa were para todas as pessoas em situações irreais/hipotéticas — em condições, desejos, e depois de as if / as though e suppose:

  • If I were you, I’d accept. / I wish it were over. / He talks as if he were a child.

Só o verbo be ainda tem esta forma especial; was é comum na fala do dia a dia, mas were é a opção segura e formal (ver a lição 35).

Só uma ainda permite escolher o sujeito e o verbo: o desejo long may + sujeito + forma base (Long may it continue.), em que may fica à frente do sujeito; a formulação mais antiga coloca a própria forma base à frente do sujeito (long live …). Veja a tabela abaixo.

Erros frequentes

  • I suggest that he is on time. -> I suggest that he be on time. — o conjuntivo de mandato usa be, não is.
  • It is vital that she arrives early. -> It is vital that she arrive early. — sem -s de terceira pessoa no conjuntivo.
  • They demanded that he doesn’t leave. -> They demanded that he not leave. — nega-se com not isolado, sem do/does.
  • If I was rich, I’d help. -> If I were rich, I’d help. — usa-se were no inglês cuidado e hipotético (lição 35).
  • He insisted that she left. (significado: ele ordenou-lhe que saísse) -> He insisted that she leave.

Dicas

  • Truque para memorizar mais fácil: depois de demand / suggest / essential / important, use a mesma forma que usaria depois de to: to be, to arrive, to pay -> tire to e fica com be, arrive, pay.
  • Preocupado por soar estranho? No inglês britânico, quase sempre pode trocar por should + forma base (…that he should arrive). É seguro e natural.
  • Para situações irreais, basta lembrar a única expressão fixa If I were you — ela transporta o conjuntivo com were para todos os outros casos também.
  • Trate come what may, so be it, be that as it may como itens de vocabulário isolados — aprenda-os inteiros, sem os analisar.
