Comparativo e superlativo

A2 Comparatives & superlatives 23 / 50

Em resumo

Use o comparativo para comparar duas coisas (cheaper, more expensive) e o superlativo para escolher uma de um grupo (the cheapest, the most expensive). Os adjetivos curtos acrescentam -er / -est; os mais longos usam more / most.

Regra

O comprimento do adjetivo decide a forma:

Tipo de adjetivoComparativoSuperlativo
Uma sílaba: cheap, small, fast+ -er: cheaperthe + -est: the cheapest
Duas sílabas em -y: happy, easy-y -> -ier: happierthe + -iest: the happiest
Algumas palavras de duas sílabas: quiet, simple, narrow, clever+ -er: quieterthe + -est: the quietest
Outras com duas ou mais sílabas: expensive, carefulmore + adj: more expensivethe most + adj: the most expensive

Para esse pequeno grupo more quiet também é possível, mas quieter é a forma habitual.

Construa comparações com estes esquemas:

  • than depois de um comparativo: Tokyo is bigger than Osaka.
  • (not) as … as para coisas iguais / desiguais: She is as tall as her brother.
  • the + superlativo, muitas vezes com in (lugares, grupos) ou of (um conjunto/período): the tallest in the class, the best day of the year.

Formas e estruturas

Mudanças de grafia nos adjetivos curtos:

Regra de grafiaBaseComparativoSuperlativo
termina em -e -> + -r / -stnicenicernicest
vogal curta + 1 consoante -> duplica-sebigbiggerbiggest
(igual)hothotterhottest
termina em -y -> -ier / -iesthappyhappierhappiest

Adjetivos irregulares (aprenda-os de cor):

badworseworst
farfurther / fartherfurthest / farthest
littlelessleast
many / muchmoremost

Torne uma comparação mais forte ou mais fraca com much / far / a bit / a little antes do comparativo:

  • This phone is much better. (grande diferença)
  • Today is a bit colder than yesterday. (pequena diferença)

Duas mudanças que acontecem juntas: the + comparativo …, the + comparativo …

  • The older I get, the happier I am.
  • The more you practise, the better you speak.

Os advérbios seguem a mesma ideia mas costumam levar more / most:

  • Please drive more carefully.
  • She works the most efficiently in the morning.

Exemplos

Erros frequentes

  • more bigger -> bigger — nunca use more com uma forma em -er (sem comparativo duplo).
  • more good / the most good -> better / the best — good é irregular.
  • She is taller that me -> taller than me — use than, não that, nas comparações.
  • the most cheap -> the cheapest — os adjetivos de uma sílaba levam -est, não most.
  • as tall than him -> as tall as him — o esquema de igualdade é as … as.

Dicas

  • Conte primeiro as sílabas: 1 sílaba -> -er/-est; 3 ou mais sílabas -> more/most. As palavras de duas sílabas terminadas em -y costumam levar -ier/-iest (easy -> easier), e uma pequena lista de outras leva -er/-est (quieter, simpler).
  • O comparativo combina com than; o superlativo combina com the (e muitas vezes in ou of).
  • Depois de than e as, um pronome complemento soa natural na fala (than me); a oração completa (than I am) é mais formal.
  • Mantenha uma pequena lista de irregulares num cartão: good/bad/far/little/many. Nunca acrescentam -er nem more.
