Em resumo

Os nomes contáveis podem contar-se: têm singular e plural, e levam a/an e números (a book, two books). Os nomes não contáveis são vistos como uma massa única: não têm plural nem a/an (water, money, advice).

Regra

Um nome contável é uma coisa separada que se pode contar uma a uma. Tem duas formas:

  • singular com a/an: a car, an apple
  • plural com -s ou um número: cars, two apples, three cars

Um nome não contável é uma massa, um material, um líquido, ou uma ideia. Trata-se como um todo único, por isso:

  • sem a/an antes dele: a water -> water / some water
  • sem plural -s: advices, informations -> advice, information
  • leva um verbo no singular: The news is good. The furniture is new.

Muitos nomes que são não contáveis em inglês são contáveis noutras línguas. Estes causam os erros mais comuns no nível A2. Aprenda esta lista curta e frequente como não contável:

Erros frequentes

  • an information -> some information / a piece of information — information é não contável; sem a/an, sem plural.
  • She gave me good advices. -> good advice / two pieces of advice — advice nunca leva -s.
  • The news are bad. -> The news is bad. — os nomes não contáveis levam um verbo no singular.
  • How much chairs? -> How many chairs? — use many (não much) com nomes contáveis.
  • I need to buy a new furniture. -> some new furniture / a new piece of furniture — furniture é não contável.

Dicas

  • Se conseguir pôr um número diretamente antes dele (two ___), é contável. Se isso soar mal, é não contável.
  • Truque para memorizar os mais complicados: advice, information, news, furniture, luggage, work, weather, money são todos não contáveis em inglês.
  • Use a piece of como classificador seguro para nomes abstratos e nomes coletivos: a piece of advice / information / news / furniture.
  • much soa formal em frases afirmativas. No inglês do dia a dia use a lot of para ambos os tipos: a lot of money, a lot of friends.
