Gespleten zinnen voor nadruk
C1 Cleft sentences for emphasis 49 / 50
De twee hoofdtypen zijn it-constructies (It was Anna who called) en what-constructies (What I need is a holiday).
1. It-constructies plaatsen het benadrukte deel direct na it + be:
It + be + focus + that / who + (rest van de zin)
|---|---|---|
| Anna called yesterday. | It was Anna that/who called yesterday. | de persoon (onderwerp) |
| Anna called Tom. | It was Tom that/who Anna called. | de persoon (voorwerp) |
| We met in 2010. | It was in 2010 that we met. | de tijd |
| The noise bothers me. | It’s the noise that bothers me. | het ding |
| We only found out on Monday. | It was not until Monday that we found out. | de tijd (= niet eerder dan dat) |
Gebruik who (of that) voor personen, en that voor dingen, tijden en plaatsen. Het werkwoord be komt meestal overeen met de tijd van het oorspronkelijke idee (It is… / It was…). In de laatste rij hoort not bij de focus (not until Monday = „pas toen”), dus er wordt niets gecorrigeerd en er volgt geen tweede it was…-zin — in tegenstelling tot It wasn’t Sam, it was Anna.
What + (bijzin) + be + focus
| Neutrale zin | What-constructie |
|---|---|
| I need a holiday. | What I need is a holiday. |
| I like her honesty. | What I like about her is her honesty. |
| We missed the train. | What happened was (that) we missed the train. |
Het werkwoord na what staat in het enkelvoud (What I need is…), omdat what = „het ding dat”.
| Patroon | Voorbeeld |
|---|---|
| The thing (that)… is… | The thing that worries me is the cost. |
| The reason (why)… is… | The reason I left was the noise. |
| The place (where)… is… | The place where we stayed was lovely. |
| The person who… is/was… | The person who fixed it was Mia. |
| All (that)… is… | All I want is some peace. |
Vormen en patronen
| Type | Skelet | Voorbeeld |
|---|---|---|
| It-constructie (persoon) | It + be + persoon + who/that… | It was the manager who signed it. |
| It-constructie (ding) | It + be + ding + that… | It’s the heat that I can’t stand. |
| It-constructie (tijd/plaats) | It + be + tijd/plaats + that… | It was here that it happened. |
| It-constructie (ontkennend) | It + be + not + X, it + be + Y | It wasn’t Sam, it was Anna. |
| It-constructie (vraag) | Be + it + focus + that/who…? | Was it the manager who signed it? |
| What-constructie (voorop) | What + bijzin + be + focus | What we need is more time. |
| What-constructie (gebeurtenis) | What + happened/matters + be + (that)… | What matters is (that) you tried. |
| The thing/reason/all-constructie | The zn (that/why)… + be + focus | All you have to do is ask. |
What is it that you need?
Let op: na All you have to do is en What you should do is staat het volgende werkwoord meestal in de kale infinitief: All you have to do is ask.
Voorbeelden
| English | Opmerking |
|---|---|
| It was Daniel who broke the window, not his brother. |
| It’s your attitude that I find difficult. |
| It was only last week that I heard the news. | Benadrukt de tijd. |
| It wasn’t the food, it was the service. | Contrast: verwerpt de ene optie, stelt de andere. |
| What surprised me was how calm she stayed. |
| What you need is a good night’s sleep. |
| The reason I’m calling is (that) I need your address. | Reason-constructie introduceert het belangrijkste punt. |
| All I did was mention the deadline. |
Veelgemaakte fouten
- It is Anna who call. -> It is Anna who calls. — het werkwoord in de who/that-bijzin stemt nog steeds overeen met de focus (Anna = she).
- What I need are a holiday. -> What I need is a holiday. — what is enkelvoud, gebruik dus is/was.
- It was him who told me. (formeel schrijven) -> It was he who told me. / informeel It was him.
- The reason is because I was late. -> The reason is that I was late. — gebruik that, niet because, na the reason is.
- Is the noise that bothers me. -> It’s the noise that bothers me.
- It-constructies zijn perfect om iemand te corrigeren: It wasn’t me, it was him. What I really wanted was…
- Je kunt een tijd of plaats splitsen met that, maar niet het hoofdwerkwoord: zeg What I did was lose my keys, niet It was lost that…
