Congiuntivo e residui formali

C1 Subjunctive & formal remnants 50 / 50

In breve

L’inglese moderno ha ormai quasi del tutto perso il congiuntivo, ma restano due elementi utili: il congiuntivo mandativo — la forma base del verbo dopo espressioni di richiesta o importanza (I insist that he be on time) — e il were-congiuntivo nelle frasi irreali (If I were you). Oltre a questi, una manciata di espressioni fisse (so be it, come what may) sono semplicemente formule da imparare a memoria.

La regola

  • I suggest that he be on time. (non is)
  • It is essential that she arrive early. (non arrives)
  • They demanded that he leave.

  • They insisted that the door remain open.

Le forme negative mettono semplicemente not prima del verbo base — senza nessun do/does/did:

  • We ask that visitors not touch the exhibits. (non do not touch)

La forma passiva usa be + participio passato: It is vital that the form be signed today.

  • I suggest that he should be on time. (brit.) = …that he be on time. (formale / am.)

Attenzione: suggest e recommend hanno due significati. L’idea mandativa (“dovresti farlo”) richiede la forma base: I recommend that she see a doctor. Una semplice constatazione di fatto (“è quello che succede”) non la richiede: The data suggests that she is improving.

2. Il were-congiuntivo usa were per tutte le persone nelle situazioni irreali/ipotetiche — nei periodi ipotetici, nei desideri e dopo as if / as though e suppose:

  • If I were you, I’d accept. / I wish it were over. / He talks as if he were a child.

Solo il verbo be conserva questa forma speciale; was è comune nel parlato quotidiano, ma were è la scelta sicura e formale (vedi lezione 35).

3. Formule fisse. Solo una lascia ancora scegliere soggetto e verbo: l’augurio long may + soggetto + verbo base (Long may it continue.), dove may precede il soggetto; la formulazione più antica mette il verbo base stesso davanti al soggetto (long live …). Vedi la tabella qui sotto.

Esempi

EnglishNota
The board recommends that the policy be reviewed annually.Congiuntivo passivo: be + participio passato, senza -s.
It is essential that every passenger wear a seatbelt.Forma base dopo essential that; non wears.
The judge ordered that he pay a fine.
We request that you not park in front of the gate.Congiuntivo negativo: not + base, senza do.
I’d suggest he should apply early.Forma britannica should + base — stesso significato, meno formale.

Suffice it to say the meeting did not go well.Espressione fissa che introduce una minimizzazione (understatement).

Errori frequenti

  • I suggest that he is on time. -> I suggest that he be on time. — il congiuntivo mandativo usa be, non is.
  • It is vital that she arrives early. -> It is vital that she arrive early. — nessuna -s di terza persona nel congiuntivo.
  • They demanded that he doesn’t leave. -> They demanded that he not leave. — la negazione si fa con il semplice not, senza do/does.
  • If I was rich, I’d help. -> If I were rich, I’d help. — usa were nell’inglese curato e ipotetico (lezione 35).
  • He insisted that she left. (significato: le ha ordinato di andarsene) -> He insisted that she leave.

Consigli

  • Trucco mnemonico più semplice: dopo demand / suggest / essential / important, usa la stessa forma che useresti dopo to: to be, to arrive, to pay -> togli to e ottieni be, arrive, pay.
  • Ti sembra che suoni strano? Nell’inglese britannico puoi quasi sempre sostituire con should + verbo base (…that he should arrive). È una scelta sicura e naturale.
  • Per le situazioni irreali, ricorda solo l’unica espressione fissa If I were you — porta con sé il were-congiuntivo anche in tutti gli altri casi.
  • Considera come what may, so be it, be that as it may come singole voci di vocabolario — imparale per intero, senza analizzarle.
