there is / there are
A1 there is / there are 9 / 50
In breve
Usa there is / there are per dire che qualcosa esiste o si trova in un luogo. Usa there is per una sola cosa (o un nome non numerabile) e there are per due o più cose.
La regola
There + be introduce qualcosa di nuovo. Il vero soggetto viene dopo il verbo, e il verbo si accorda con quel soggetto.
- There is + nome singolare o non numerabile: There is a book on the table. There is some milk.
- There are + nome plurale: There are two cafes near my house.
Spesso aggiungiamo un luogo alla fine (on the table, near my house, in the box), ma non è sempre necessario: There is a problem.
Non confondere there con it. There dice che qualcosa esiste. It identifica o si riferisce a una cosa che già conosciamo.
| Usa there (esiste) | Usa it (identifica / si riferisce a) |
|---|---|
| There is a problem. | It is a big problem. |
| There is a dog in the garden. | It is a friendly dog. |

Domande e risposte brevi
| Domanda | Risposta breve (sì) | Risposta breve (no) |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a lift? | Yes, there is. | No, there isn’t. |
| Are there any shops? | Yes, there are. | No, there aren’t. |
Nella risposta breve non ripetiamo il nome: Yes, there is. (non Yes, there is a lift.)
Con un elenco, il verbo di solito si accorda con il primo elemento:
- There is a pen and two books on the desk. (primo elemento = a pen, singolare)
- There are two books and a pen on the desk. (primo elemento = two books, plurale)
Forme contratte: there’s è molto comune nel parlato e nello scritto. There’re (per there are) si sente nel parlato ma è rara nello scritto — scrivi there are per intero.
Passato (di più nella lezione 14): usa there was (singolare) e there were (plurale): There was a party. There were many guests.
Esempi
| English | Nota |
|---|---|

| There are three messages for you. | Nome plurale -> are. |
| There isn’t a clock in this room. | Negativa singolare. |
| There aren’t any clean cups. | Negativa plurale con any. |

Errori frequenti
- There are a book on the desk. -> There is a book on the desk. — una sola cosa richiede is.
- There is two cafes. -> There are two cafes. — il plurale richiede are.
- It is a problem with the car. (per introdurlo) -> There is a problem with the car. — usa there per dire che qualcosa esiste.
- There aren’t no seats. -> There aren’t any seats. / There are no seats. — una sola negazione, non due.
- Yes, there is a lift. (come risposta breve) -> Yes, there is. — non ripetere il nome.
Consigli
- Guarda il nome subito dopo il verbo: una cosa sola o non numerabile -> is; due o più -> are.
- There’s no e there isn’t a / there aren’t any significano la stessa cosa; no suona un po’ più forte.
- There = «esiste»; it = «sto parlando di questa cosa». Se puoi indicare qualcosa già noto, usa it.
- Per il passato, sostituisci semplicemente is/are con was/were — tutto il resto resta uguale.
