Present Continuous (+ verbi di stato)
A1 Present continuous (+ stative verbs) 8 / 50
In breve
| Soggetto | be | verbo-ing |
|---|---|---|
| I | am | working |
| you / we / they | are | working |
| he / she / it | is | working |
Si usa per:
- Ora, nel momento in cui si parla: She’s reading a book right now.
I’m studying for an exam this week.
- Situazioni temporanee: He’s staying with friends until Friday.
- Situazioni che cambiano: It’s getting dark. / Prices are rising.
| Regola | Esempi |
|---|---|
| Si elimina una -e finale muta | make -> making, write -> writing, have -> having |
| -ie diventa -y + ing | lie -> lying, die -> dying, tie -> tying |
| Tipo | Struttura | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| Negativa | soggetto + be + not + -ing | She isn’t working today. |
| Domanda sì/no | be + soggetto + -ing? | Are you coming? |
| Domanda con wh- | wh- + be + soggetto + -ing? | What is he doing? |
| Domanda negativa | be + n’t + soggetto + -ing? | Aren’t you coming? |
Verbi di stato. Alcuni verbi descrivono uno stato, non un’azione, e di solito non si usano al Continuous: like, love, hate, want, need, know, understand, believe, mean, prefer, own, belong, seem, contain. Di’ I want / I know, NON I am wanting / I am knowing.
Alcuni verbi cambiano significato tra Simple e Continuous:
| Verbo | Simple (stato) | Continuous (azione) |
|---|---|---|
| have | possedere: I have a car. | attività: I’m having lunch. |
| think | opinione: I think it’s nice. | processo mentale: I’m thinking about it. |
| see | con gli occhi: I see a bird. | appuntamento: I’m seeing the doctor tomorrow. |
| taste | sapore: The soup tastes salty. | l’azione: She’s tasting the soup. |

Esempi
| English | Nota |
|---|---|
| The baby is sleeping, so please be quiet. | Azione che accade proprio ora. |

| Look - it is starting to rain. | Una situazione che cambia. |
| I’m flying to Madrid on Monday. | Programma futuro con un’indicazione di tempo. |

Errori frequenti
- I am wanting tea. -> I want tea.
- She is knowing the answer. -> She knows the answer. — know è un verbo di stato.
- He is runing fast. -> He is running fast. — raddoppia la consonante: run -> running.
- I am makeing dinner. -> I am making dinner. — elimina la -e muta prima di -ing.
- Do you coming tonight? -> Are you coming tonight? — le domande usano be, non do.
Consigli
- Chiediti: «Sta accadendo ora o temporaneamente?» -> Continuous. «È un’abitudine o è sempre vero?» -> Present Simple: I’m wearing a coat (ora) vs I wear a coat in winter (abitudine).
- Parole come now, right now, at the moment, today, this week, look!, listen! spesso segnalano il Present Continuous.
