Dimostrativi: this/that/these/those
A1 Demonstratives: this/that/these/those 6 / 50
In breve
Usa this/that/these/those per indicare le cose e dire se sono vicine o lontane da te. This e these indicano vicinanza (qui, ora); that e those indicano lontananza (lì, allora, concluso).
La regola
I dimostrativi svolgono due funzioni:
- Aggettivo — prima di un sostantivo: this book, those cars.
- Pronome — da solo, senza sostantivo dopo: This is nice. What are those?
Ti dicono due cose allo stesso tempo:
- Numero: singolare o plurale.
- Distanza: vicino a chi parla o lontano da chi parla.
| Vicino (qui / ora) | Lontano (lì / allora) | |
|---|---|---|
| Singolare | this | that |
| Plurale | these | those |
Quando li usi con un sostantivo, il sostantivo segue subito dopo: this apple, these apples, that man, those men. La forma deve accordarsi con il numero del sostantivo: sostantivo singolare -> this/that; sostantivo plurale -> these/those.
Usi comuni di tutti i giorni:
- Per indicare: Look at that bird! I like these shoes.
- Per presentare le persone: This is my friend Sam. These are my parents.
- Al telefono: Hello, this is Anna. Who’s that? (Usi this per te stesso, that per l’altra persona.)
- Per riferirti a un’idea appena detta o sentita: That’s a good idea. That’s why I’m tired.
Per evitare di ripetere un sostantivo, usa one (singolare) o ones (plurale): I like this one. The red ones are mine. Not that one - this one. Un pronome dimostrativo può anche essere precisato da una frase dopo di lui invece che da un sostantivo — non serve anche ones: These are mine; those on the shelf are yours. Those of us who cycle leave earlier.

Esempi
| English | Nota |
|---|---|
| This coffee is hot. | Sostantivo singolare, vicino a chi parla. |
| These keys are mine. | Sostantivo plurale, vicino a chi parla. |
| Can you see that house on the hill? | Singolare, lontano. |
| Look at those birds in the sky! | Plurale, lontano. |
| This is my sister, Mia. | Presenti una persona vicina. |
| Hello, this is Anna. Who’s that? | Al telefono: this = io, that = tu. |
| That’s a great idea! | Riferimento a qualcosa appena detto. |
| I don’t want the blue cup - I want this one. | one sostituisce «cup» per evitare di ripeterlo. |
Errori frequenti
- I like these car. -> I like this car. — il sostantivo singolare richiede this/that, non these/those.
- Look at this birds. -> Look at these birds. — il sostantivo plurale richiede these/those.
- What is those? -> What are those? — il dimostrativo plurale vuole il verbo al plurale.
- Is this John? (al telefono, chiedendo dell’altra persona) -> Is that John? — la persona lontana dall’altra parte della linea è that, non this.
- I want the red one. (riferito a più cose) -> I want the red ones. — usa ones per il plurale.
Consigli
- Trucco mnemonico: this e these vanno con here; that e those vanno con there.
- Prima conta, poi scegli: una cosa sola = this/that; più di una = these/those.
- Al telefono, tu sei sempre this (This is Anna) e l’altra persona è that (Who’s that?).
- Usa that’s per reagire alle idee: That’s true. That’s why. That’s a good question.
