Il verbo «to be» (presente)
A1 The verb 'to be' (present) 3 / 50
In breve
| Soggetto | Forma |
|---|---|
| I | am |
| he / she / it | is |
| you / we / they | are |
Nel parlato e nella scrittura di tutti i giorni si usano di solito le forme contratte (le forme brevi): I’m, you’re, he’s.
Per formare il negativo, aggiungi not dopo il verbo: I am not, he is not, we are not. Per is not e are not esistono due forme brevi — isn’t / ‘s not e aren’t / ‘re not. (Ma I am not ha una sola forma contratta: I’m not.)
Per formare una domanda sì/no, metti il verbo prima del soggetto (si chiama inversione): Am I…? Is she…? Are you…?

Esempi
| English | Nota |
|---|---|
| I’m a teacher. | Identità / professione — I am, contratta. |
| She is from Brazil. | Nazionalità / origine — is con she. |
| We are very happy today. | Sentimento — are con we. |
| My brother is ten years old. | Età — l’inglese usa be, non have. |
| It’s cold this morning. | Tempo atmosferico — it is, contratta. |
| The tickets aren’t expensive. | Prezzo negativo — are not, forma breve. |
| Are you tired? | Domanda sì/no per inversione. |
| I’m hungry, but I’m not thirsty. | Espressioni fisse con be per sentimenti/stati. |
Errori frequenti
- I am teacher -> I am a teacher — le professioni richiedono a/an (vedi gli articoli).
- He are tall -> He is tall — he/she/it vuole sempre is.
- I no am ready -> I ‘m not ready — metti not dopo il verbo, non don’t.
- Yes, I’m. -> Yes, I am. — non usare mai una forma contratta in una risposta breve affermativa.
- I have 30 years -> I am 30 (years old) — usa be per l’età, non have.
Consigli
- Memorizza le tre coppie come una filastrocca: I am, he is, you are — tutto il resto viene di conseguenza.
- Per sentimenti e stati, l’inglese usa be: I’m hungry / cold / afraid / right — anche dove l’italiano potrebbe usare have.
- He’s può significare he is (qui) o he has (altre lezioni). Ad A1, con le descrizioni, significa he is.
- Fai una domanda per verificare, poi rispondi in breve: Are you OK? - Yes, I am.
