Les phrases clivées pour mettre en relief
C1 Cleft sentences for emphasis 49 / 50
Les deux types principaux sont les clivées en it (It was Anna who called) et les pseudo-clivées en what (What I need is a holiday).
1. Les clivées en It placent la partie mise en relief juste après it + be :
It + be + élément mis en relief + that / who + (reste de la proposition)
|---|---|---|
| Anna called yesterday. | It was Anna that/who called yesterday. | la personne (sujet) |
| Anna called Tom. | It was Tom that/who Anna called. | la personne (complément) |
| We met in 2010. | It was in 2010 that we met. | le moment |
| The noise bothers me. | It’s the noise that bothers me. | la chose |
| We only found out on Monday. | It was not until Monday that we found out. | le moment (= pas avant) |
Utilisez who (ou that) pour les personnes, et that pour les choses, les moments et les lieux. Le verbe be s’accorde en général avec le temps de l’idée de départ (It is… / It was…). Dans la dernière ligne, not fait partie de l’élément mis en relief (not until Monday = « seulement alors »), donc on ne corrige rien et aucune seconde proposition en it was… ne suit — contrairement à It wasn’t Sam, it was Anna.
2. Les clivées en What (pseudo-clivées) placent d’abord une proposition en what et la partie mise en relief après be :
What + (proposition) + be + élément mis en relief
| Phrase neutre | Clivée en What |
|---|---|
| I need a holiday. | What I need is a holiday. |
| I like her honesty. | What I like about her is her honesty. |
| We missed the train. | What happened was (that) we missed the train. |
Le verbe après what est au singulier (What I need is…), parce que what = « la chose qui ».
| Structure | Exemple |
|---|---|
| The thing (that)… is… | The thing that worries me is the cost. |
| The reason (why)… is… | The reason I left was the noise. |
| The place (where)… is… | The place where we stayed was lovely. |
| The person who… is/was… | The person who fixed it was Mia. |
| All (that)… is… | All I want is some peace. |
Formes et structures
| Type | Schéma | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| Clivée en It (personne) | It + be + personne + who/that… | It was the manager who signed it. |
| Clivée en It (chose) | It + be + chose + that… | It’s the heat that I can’t stand. |
| Clivée en It (moment/lieu) | It + be + moment/lieu + that… | It was here that it happened. |
| Clivée en It (négative) | It + be + not + X, it + be + Y | It wasn’t Sam, it was Anna. |
| Clivée en It (question) | Be + it + élément mis en relief + that/who… ? | Was it the manager who signed it? |
| Clivée en What (en tête) | What + proposition + be + élément mis en relief | What we need is more time. |
| Clivée en What (événement) | What + happened/matters + be + (that)… | What matters is (that) you tried. |
| Clivée en The thing/reason/all | The N (that/why)… + be + élément mis en relief | All you have to do is ask. |
Pour interroger une clivée en it, inversez it et be : Was it the manager who signed it? What is it that you need?
Remarque : après All you have to do is et What you should do is, le verbe qui suit est en général un infinitif nu : All you have to do is ask.
Exemples
| English | Remarque |

| It was Daniel who broke the window, not his brother. |
| It’s your attitude that I find difficult. |
| It was only last week that I heard the news. | Met en relief le moment. |
| It wasn’t the food, it was the service. | Contraste : on écarte une option, on affirme l’autre. |

| What you need is a good night’s sleep. |
| The reason I’m calling is (that) I need your address. |
| All I did was mention the deadline. | Minimise l’action (infinitif nu après was). |
Erreurs fréquentes
- It is Anna who call. -> It is Anna who calls. — le verbe de la proposition en who/that s’accorde encore avec l’élément mis en relief (Anna = she).
- What I need are a holiday. -> What I need is a holiday. — what est singulier, donc utilisez is/was.
- It was him who told me. (écrit soutenu) -> It was he who told me. / en familier It was him.
- The reason is because I was late. -> The reason is that I was late. — utilisez that, pas because, après the reason is.
- Is the noise that bothers me. -> It’s the noise that bothers me. — une clivée en it a besoin du it explétif ; ne l’oubliez pas.
Conseils
- Demandez-vous : « Qu’est-ce que je cherche vraiment à mettre en relief ? » Placez ce mot juste après It is/was (clivée en it) ou juste après be (clivée en what).
It wasn’t me, it was him. What I really wanted was…
- Vous pouvez cliver un moment ou un lieu avec that, mais pas le verbe principal : dites What I did was lose my keys, pas It was lost that…
