too / enough / so / such

A2 too / enough / so / such 31 / 50

Siempre suena a problema.

  • too + adjetivo/adverbio: It’s too hot. / You drive too fast.
  • too much + sustantivo incontable: too much salt, too much noise
  • too many + sustantivo contable: too many people, too many emails

enough = lo justo que necesitas (neutro o positivo).

  • adjetivo/adverbio + enough (enough va DESPUÉS): old enough, fast enough, good enough
  • enough + sustantivo (enough va ANTES): enough money, enough time, enough chairs

too / (not) enough + infinitivo con to para dar un resultado:

  • too tired to walk (= no puedo caminar, es demasiado)
  • old enough to drive (= suficiente edad, está bien)
  • not warm enough to swim (= no hay suficiente calor)

Cuando quien hace la acción es otra persona, nómbrala con for antes de to: too heavy for my sister to lift / not warm enough for the children to swim.

so + adjetivo/adverbio lo refuerza: so tired, so quickly. such + (a/an) + (adjetivo) + sustantivo hace lo mismo con un sustantivo: such a long day, such nice people. Las dos suelen añadir una oración con that para mostrar el resultado: so tired that I slept / such a good film that I saw it twice.

too frente a very: very good = simplemente fuerte (positivo). too good = un problema. No digas «The film was too good, I loved it» — usa very.

Errores frecuentes

  • I have too many homework. -> I have too much homework. — homework es incontable, así que usa too much.
  • She is enough old to drive. -> She is old enough to drive. — enough va DESPUÉS de un adjetivo.
  • He is too tired for walk. -> He is too tired to walk. — el verbo del resultado lleva to, nunca for + un verbo sin marca; for va antes, y nombra a la persona que lo hace (too tired for me to walk).
  • It was a so nice day. -> It was such a nice day. — antes de un sustantivo usa such (a), no so.
  • The hotel was too good, we loved it. -> The hotel was very good, we loved it. — too significa un problema; para una idea positiva usa very.

Consejos

  • Prueba rápida: si es una queja o un problema, usa too; si está bien o es positivo, usa enough o very.
  • Truco de orden de palabras: adjetivo + enough pero enough + sustantivo (good enough frente a enough food).
  • so + adjetivo solo (so nice); such + un grupo nominal (such a nice place). Si hay un sustantivo, usa such.
  • Después de too much / too many, comprueba el sustantivo: incontable -> much, contable plural -> many (véase la lección 21).
