there is / there are
A1 there is / there are 9 / 50
En resumen
Usa there is / there are para decir que algo existe o está en un lugar. Usa there is para una cosa (o un sustantivo incontable) y there are para dos o más cosas.
La regla
There + be introduce algo nuevo.
- There is + sustantivo singular o sustantivo incontable: There is a book on the table. There is some milk.
- There are + sustantivo plural: There are two cafes near my house.
A menudo añadimos un lugar al final (on the table, near my house, in the box), pero no siempre hace falta: There is a problem.
No confundas there con it. There dice que algo existe.
| Usa there (existencia) | Usa it (identifica / se refiere) |
|---|---|
| There is a problem. | It is a big problem. |
| There is a dog in the garden. | It is a friendly dog. |
Formas y estructuras
Afirmativa
| Sujeto después del verbo | Forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| singular / incontable | there is (there’s) | There’s a key in the drawer. |
| plural | there are | There are four chairs. |
Negativa
| Forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|
| there is not / there isn’t | There isn’t a bus today. |
| there are not / there aren’t | There aren’t any seats. |
| there is no + sustantivo | There’s no time. |
| there are no + sustantivo | There are no windows. |
Preguntas y respuestas cortas
| Pregunta | Respuesta corta (sí) | Respuesta corta (no) |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a lift? | Yes, there is. | No, there isn’t. |
| Are there any shops? | Yes, there are. | No, there aren’t. |
No repetimos el sustantivo en la respuesta corta: Yes, there is. (no Yes, there is a lift.)
- There is a pen and two books on the desk. (primer elemento = a pen, singular)
- There are two books and a pen on the desk. (primer elemento = two books, plural)
Pasado (más en la lección 14): usa there was (singular) y there were (plural): There was a party. There were many guests.
Ejemplos
| English | Nota |
|---|---|

| There isn’t a clock in this room. | Negativa singular. |
| There aren’t any clean cups. | Negativa plural con any. |
| There’s no reason to worry. | there’s no + sustantivo = «ninguno» con énfasis. |
| Is there a bank near here? | Pregunta de sí/no, singular. |
| There is a table and two lamps in the hall. |
Errores frecuentes
- There are a book on the desk. -> There is a book on the desk. — una sola cosa necesita is.
- There is two cafes. -> There are two cafes. — el plural necesita are.
- It is a problem with the car. (para introducirlo) -> There is a problem with the car. — usa there para decir que algo existe.
- There aren’t no seats. -> There aren’t any seats. / There are no seats. — una sola negación, no dos.
- Yes, there is a lift. (como respuesta corta) -> Yes, there is. — no repitas el sustantivo.
Consejos
- Fíjate en el sustantivo justo después del verbo: una cosa o incontable -> is; dos o más -> are.
- There’s no y there isn’t a / there aren’t any significan lo mismo; no suena un poco más enfático.
- There = «existe»; it = «estoy hablando de esto».
